I have a silver teapot, engraved to the effect that it was won by my grandfather (John Simpson) as "Most Successful Competitor" at the "Buchan Gathering 1890".
I presume this was some sort of annual Highland Games event, but don't know anything more about it, or even where it was held. Does anyone have any information about the Buchan Gathering, and even better whether there would have been any newspaper reports of the 1890 event?

The Buchan Gathering was indeed a Highland games event.
This link should take you to an image of a Poster for The Buchan Gathering 1892. http://www.rls.org.uk/database/results.php?field=where&searchterm=%22Buchan%22&searchdb=scran

Thanks Kirsty, that was very interesting.
Even better will be if someone can come up with any photographs or newspaper reports of the Games - I thought I had cracked it on Google Images until the screen came up with a "Buchan Gathering" of caravan enthusiasts!
Any idea what local paper would have covered the Mintlaw area at that period?

The country park is still used for the Mintlaw Highland Games in August. maybe someone in aberdeen council could point you to the organisers who may have some archives.
Otherwise the Aberdeen Press and Journal just might have something in the archives ( if they have any).

Hi Stanza,
Found an online copy of Aberdeen Weekly Journal (Aberdeen, Scotland), Monday, August 19, 1889; Issue 10775. Under the column, THE BUCHAN GATHERING it reports on the games for 1889. There is a J Simpson of Rathen competing but he did not win the most successful coompetitor that year.
I could not find a report for 1890 but it sometimes is called "THE BUCHAN GATHERING" "THE BUCHANAN HIGHLAND GAMES . Perhaps you can contact Aberdeen Weekly Journal, they might have a report around 18th August 1890

That's very interesting, thank you - where can I access the online copy of the Aberdeen Weekly Journal, as it is probable that the "J Simpson" mentioned was my grandfather? (I see that the British library is digitising this newspaper, but haven't been able to navigate to individual copies.)
Someone from the Buchan Heritage Society kindly provided me with the 1890 edition of the Buchan Observer in which the details of my grandfather's success that year were reported, but if I could get hold of the details for 1889 as well that would be excellent.

Hi Stanza,
Go to this site and register, it is free, http://access.gale.com/gdctrial/login.html
The login is "virtual" without the "" and password is "books" you have to input own email address , then enter. You will find a list of Newspapers, I use "19th Century British Newspapers", go to search Buchan Gathering and you will find the 1889 list. it can be downlaoded to PC, but did now want to infringe copyright laws.

Wow, Tom - that's a superb mine of information and I'm sure this won't be the last time I'll be delving into it!
Thank you, that is indeed a reference to my grandfather - he upped his game the following year to be the most successfu competitor, or else 1889 was just a bad year for him!
Thanks again
John

Hi Stanza,
Glad you liked the link, I use it regularly, it is quite thorough.
Yes, your grandad raised his game alright, how old was he? Did he carry onhis athletic career?

Sort of, he joined the Glasgow Police and kept fit by running after the bad guys - must have done well at it as he reached the rank of Inspector!
Actually, he must have kept up his fitness level pretty well, as I have photos of him with various police sports clubs (never knew him , though, he died before I was born.) He passed on his sporting prowess to my father, who was a professional footballer, but the sporting gene died out then!

The local park where the games would have been held is most likely the one known as ADEN PARK Mintlaw.A huge place, with the ruins of the big house in the centre, there is a lake & the fromer stables.A beautiful place where we often go just to walk around the grounds.Mintlaw is a village albeit a might bigger nowadays.I live just 4 miles away.Highland type games are still held there today, not on the same scale as in the "olden" days, but competitions for Highland dancing, pipe bands etc still go on.Unfortunately there is no website for the Buchan Observer anymore, printing of the Buchan Observer newspaper now takes place in Edinburgh, but there is an office in Chapel Street Peterhead that might be able to help re enquiries for archival material.
Joan.

Thanks, Joan - that's interesting background, and I may well contact the Peterhead office of the paper. And yes, the copy of the Buchan Observer I was kindly sent by someone from the Buchan Heritage Society shows that the old Buchan Games were indeed held in Aden Park, Mintlaw.
