Catholic Cemeteries in Paisley
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 14:51 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone tell how many and the names of any Catholic Cemeteries in Paisley. I am visiting Paisley next month from Canada and want to do some research in Paisley.

I suspect that some of the people I am looking for may be in a Catholic Cemetery rather than Hawkshead.  Is there any way to look up Catholic Burials in Paisley?

Dave

Hi Dave

Hope you have a good visit. My home town tho I don't live there now.

I don't know what time frame your looking at but there are none to my knowledge. Everyone either goes to Woodside or Hawkhead. Hawkhead opened in 1891 and Woodside 1845 (and 1938 for the crem). The crem is the only one in Paisley.

However just to make sure it is well worth contacting the local library locstuds.els[a]renfrewshire.gov.uk. (They are situated on the High St if you get the chance to go there in person)

Although there are several Catholic churches in the town and of course a Catherdal (ST Mirins) none have graveyards adjacent to them. I have a feeling and library can confirm this that because there were no Catholic graveyards in Paisley those being buried in 'Catholic' ground were buried  in Barrhead. (Barrhead is not far away at all)

Hawkhead is owned and run by the local council but woodside is run by a private company. (if you do go to woodside to note it is hilly - steep in places). Both council and private company will charge for searching for any records for you - last I enquired was £26 + VAT for a 30 min search by the council- a bit steep! But both cemetaries are huge so unless you have the lair nos and loads of time will be a long search.

Hope you enjoy your visit - and weather keeps dry for you!

Hi again Dave

Had a further thought. Again depends on your timeframe but might be worth contacting funeral directors in Paisley as they may have recrrds. The main ones are Goudies and the CoOp. I don't know how long they keep records for or if they charge for the info but worth a try.

This is the link http://www.ufindus.com/funeral_directors/paisley

And they might be a lot cheaper than Renfrewshire Council even if there is a charge!

HI Ann

Many thanks for the info. I never thought of going to the funeral homes. Sounds like a great idea. This is probably my one and only trip so I am trying to make the most of it.

Again many thanks

I responded on the Barrhead Scotland site but it hasn't appeared yet - There is a small Catholic Cemetery on Chapel Brae (Darnley Road) Barrhead, next to what used to be the old St John's Church. The stones are all virtually unreadable. There is also St Conval's, Glasgow Road, Barrhead but I believe that is a fairly new cemetery, circa 1939. Depending on the dates you are looking for, it may be better to either contact the National Archives of Scotland, who hold copies of all pre 1855 Roman Catholic Registers or contact the Scottish Catholic Archives at www.scottishcatholicarchives.org.uk, who may be able to advise you. I think both the Diocese of Paisley and the Archdioscese of Glasgow have retained their own records.

There has only been one Catholic Church in Barrhead since 1841 - St John's - you could try emailing them.

Barrhead is now in East Renfrewshire and the local historian is very helpful - email customerservices@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk and put local historian in the title bar. They are usually good at coming back to you. Local Historian is based at Giffnock.

Hi Dave, like Ann I was born and brought up in Paisley, but have been living in the Midlands of England for a long time now.  There is a site - www.Paisley.org.uk who have some amazingly knowledgeable people who know a lot about Paisley things and it may be an idea to contact them.  I'm sure someone there will be able to help.

St Conval's in Barrhead is within the Paisley diocese and it's definitely worth checking with them if it's fairly modern burials you're looking for.  They have their own computerised records and custodian on site and were very helpful and quick to respond with my query.

The address is

Miss Margaret Mary Donnelly
St Conval's Cemetery
Glasgow Road
Barrhead
Glasgow
G78 1TH
