Great grandfather in Royal Artillery in India
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 00:30 UTC (UK) »

My wife's great grandfather Thomas Knight b. abt. 1828 is listed in the 1851 census as a serving gunner driver Royal Artillery at St Nicholas Island Barracks St Andrews Devon.  He's not in the 1861 Census, but in 1871 is living in Lambeth with Lydia who was born in Madras Bangalore. Their first child was born in 1868 in London and he is a 'pensioner' at 45.
Can anyone help please as to where we could find the marriage record?
are his Service/Pension Records likely to still exist?
It seems he went to India between 1851 and 1868 any ideas as to what he would be doing - were home based regiments sent to India to deal with the rebellion?

TIA

A quick search of http://www.fibis.org/ (families in british india) shows that Thomas Knight married Lydia Brown in 1859 in Madras (http://www.search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/simplesearchsummarycat.php?s_id=139&sn=knight&fn=thomas&f=&to=&t=&c=&searchtype=0&tn=1).

Have a look at the site to see what else you can find.

The forum Research In Other Countries/Other Countries/Family Research In India (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,356269.0.html) gives lots of other resources that you could use to research your ggrandfather more.

Hope this is a good starting point.

Like you I found that my Greatgrandfather had been in the Royal Artillery. Mine was also an army pensioner having served 22+ years. All army pensioners have their discharge papers filed in the Public Records Office in Kew. I spent 2 days looking but eventually found his. They have a facility there to copy it for you. The records showed that my GGF served from 1857 to 1879 and had received 5 good conduct badges. He had spent the first 18 months in 13 Battalion, then nearly 10 years in India with 11 Battalion and the remainder in the Coast Brigade. Apparently the Coast Brigade was for gunners nearing the end of their service who manned the Martello Towers around our coastline. My GGF married a younger woman from near his tower which is why I am able to provide this information. I had no idea of what part of the Royal Artillery or dates when I went to Kew. The record does give you personal stuff as well as army records.

Thank you very much for your message.  I think we too will head for Kew in the New Year, after your encouraging result.   My GGF also married a much younger lady, though in India, and I do wonder if perhaps she was the daughter of another serving soldier.   Thanks again, Ken's wife.
