What is a Residenter ?

1876 my great etc grandfather's occupation was a Residenter.

Can anyone tell me what this was?

How old was he? He could have been  resident in  Almshouses, or something similar, where the occupants were called Residenters.

I saw a parish register for a marriage in Glasgow 1820 and it stated the husband was "residenter there" His occupation was a weaver. No addresses were given, just names, dates & occ.

No he wasn't living in an Almshouse, so that is out.


My great grandfather is
John Huston b abt 1802 Londonderry, Ireland
1866 moved to Australia
Lived in Clunes, Victoria
occupations listed as
Cartage Contractor (date unknown)
Miner & Hotelkeeper in 1876 (74 years old at this time)  & Residenter ?

Just checked some of the online dictionaries and they give the definition of residenter as "a resident" - and add that the word is now obsolete or colloquial.

Webster's Third New International Dictionary defines 'residenter' as 'resident or inhabitant'.

It would be used in conjunction with an occupation to indicate that the person both worked and lived at the place concerned.
