LOST - Fairys in 1841/51- help please!
« on: Tuesday 25 October 05 12:10 BST (UK) »

Kia Ora
I have 2 lost Fairy sisters in 1841-1851.

JANE FAIRY bap March 1821 Conington Hunts is missing after her baptism until she turns up as a witness at her sister's marriage in 1845 in Connington. Then  disappears again until her own marriage (also in Connington) in 1860.
Jane is with her husband John Mobbs in Hinton Northants in 1861.

MARY ANN FAIRY  baptised February 1823 in Connington  is also missing until she married Robert Swinton in Connington in 1845. She appears as a wife in 1851 in Wistow.

Fairy maybe spelt Fairy, Fairey, Farey. They could literally be anywhere in England!
And Ancestry has a habit of confusing Hants & Hunts!
I have traced the 6 siblings of these 2 up hill and down dale , even to Australia and would dearly love to know where they are hiding!
many thanks
Marlene

Who's found a Fairy!
« Reply #1 on: Tuesday 25 October 05 19:26 BST (UK) »

Hi Marlene

Well Jane was a doddle. Indexed as Farry but is probably Fairy although I wouldn't blame the transcriber.

The amazing thing though is it's the first time I have seen a census page literally full of servants, down from coachman to scullery maid. Jane was third from bottom as a kitchen maid. And there were 10 on the previous page

HO107/2135 folio 87
Thoresby House, Thoresby Park, Edwinstowe, Notts
Earl Manvers 72 peer of the realm; Countess Manvers 66; Lady Amord?(this may have been Honora)  Pierrepont dau unm 28; Viscount Newark son unm 26 followed by 31 servants of which # 29 was
Jane Fairy servant unmarr 30 Kitchen maid born Hunts Conington

I'll check for the two of them  in Conington in 1841 but if they're not there you're asking the impossible - you'll just have to wait until 1841 comes on line which may be by the end of the year.  If your local library subscribes to Ancestry then the 1851 is working. No not in Conington. Everything comes to he who waits!

Regards

David

PS The aristocracy is indexed as Carl Hanners, Countess Manven, and Vesocount Newark

OH my goodness that probably explains the piece of silver my aunt now has!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The kitchen maid probably had very large pockets!
Thanks so much for that - now have to get the map - not had anyone in Notts before!
Wiow what excitement! She might even have been there in 1841.
Fraid our wee library can't afford the NZ$20,ooo it costs to get ProQuest (Ancestry) online. Only 2 libraries in the whole country have it!
Many thanks David for that one David I am thrilled!

Kia Ora Marlene

I spent some time in Conington graveyard over the weekend in beautiful sunshine. It really is a beautiful church, although sadly now closed. Might have found you more  questions than answers but here goes.

I could only find one Fairy memorial which reads

Sacred to the memory

Mary Ann wife of

John Fairy

d1888

March 6th

In the              her age

I couldn't make out the middle bit of the bottom line, even using 'braille', but fortunately when leaving I spotted another headstone which said

In the flower of her age

Which seems a good fit. I suspected this to mean in full blossom and googling this morning I came up with refs to 20 and 30 year olds. Bit surprised therefore to find she had died aged 65 according to FreeBMD. I could be mis-translating or someone was being very generous.

Is this Mary Ann Ding d1888 you sent in your PM?

I also searched Rootschat this morning to find this topic using Fairy and Conington and saw there was a number of topics about the name and area so I am including the following anecdotal evidence as background for other Rootschatters.

When I told my step-brother in Huntingdon where I was going he said Fairy was not a name he was familiar with in Huntingdon (town) but there were lots of Fairys over in Godmanchester (2 miles) away. He also thought they were corn merchants/farmers.

At Conington I was surprised to find lots of graves with the same surname lined up side by side or in groups and also repetitions of the same names over and over again. This might be of help with the Fairys as the plots to the left of the one I found could well be linked as they have no markers. I had a strong sense of being in a family graveyard, posh headstones in family groups with a strong sense of identity. Not somewhere where we would find the servants/labourers which would have added a much wider variety of surnames associated with a large workforce.

A woman asked if she could help me and proved to be very helpful. After explaining I was 'looking for the Fairies' she didn't run a mile but started making phone calls for me as Fairy was not a name she would associate with Conington. Several calls later it was clear that Fairy was not a local name in living memory. Bearing in mind my conversation with Bobby earlier 'local' could be interpreted very differently as we were less than 10 miles from Godmanchester.

She explained that for miles around there were estates of the landed gentry and that it was very much 'them and us' in those days either gentry or servants\labourers with very few classes in between. In fact the church and graveyard was located on the Heathcote family estate. Inevitably there would be lots of migratory labour with subsequent marriages and burials taking place here but the family origins in towns and villages miles away. This fits well with David's comments above.

Unfortunately as it was late on a Sat afternoon she could not get in touch with 3 people. The local Councillor, local historian and ex registrar but did provide names. Quite rightly she was reluctant to give out personal mobiles but suggested if I tracked down the Councillor through the local authority she would be able provide contacts to the other two.

Hope this helps in some way. I'll have pictures to share by late Wednesday.

Bye for now
Tony

Kia Ora Tony!
FIRSTLY a huge thank you! Your sense of the historical comes through loud & clear and your interpretation of the area fits quite well with my own findings and feelings!

William Fairy came from Riseley Beds, married and had his family in Connington beginning in 1818.  The extended family was in the village or in the Castle grounds (at the Porter's Lodge in 1851 which I understand is basically all that remains!)

William died 1869, his wife Ann 1870   Probably in the 1970s someone in the family took a photo but it was black & white & probably not taken at the right time of day!

John Fairy 1818 (son of above) married Mary Ann Ding in 1841.  They had 11 children and when Mary Ann died in 1888, John emigrated to Australia with, over a period of time, what remained of his family!

The last Fairy presence of which I am aware was John 1818's son John 1844 who returned from Lambeth with a 2nd wife in time for the 1891 census. His daughters were married at Connington, his 2nd wife died there and John 1844 died March Q 1822.

So the Fairys possibly would have been  'outsiders' only being in the area for just over a century!

Heathcote was a lawyer & owner of the Castle. He had a brother who at one time was involved in the church at Riseley.  Ties between the Fairys & Heathcotes  as servants & masters were obviously cemented as the Fairy children are linked to the Heathcotes "town house" address in London.

Others obviously obtained employment at the homes of landed gentry with connections to the Heathcotes.

So to summarise there are probably only 3 known graves of Fairys at Connington

1. Sarah in 1841 with parents William 1869 & Ann 1870.

2. Mary Ann (Ding) Fairy 1888

3. Possibly John & Annie Fairy died 1922 & 1903 respectively.

I would love the name of the local historian if poss  as my research might be of interest to the locals?

Cannot thank you enough Tony - you are a wee wonder.
Regards
Marlene

Kia ora Marlene,
As they are living persons I will post by contacts by PM. I now have personal interest in this one as my search  for your post turned up Paynes/Paines of Huntingdon of which I spent some time in two branches of the family over the weekend.

My beloved Ireland, didn't do it against Argentina, and the perfidious French having supported the underdog now find themselves facing the Maorii Haka on their own turf instead of a weaker side. Marlene I will be cheering the Maoris on against them, but might switch allegiance if England go though in next round.

Best wishes
Tony

p.s. Rugby World Cup 2007 is the subject for those who don't know this is the background
