Where can i find.....
« on: Tuesday 25 October 05 20:43 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
Does anypne know where i can find out, if possible, if there were any log books taken by the schools in Selkirk around the late 1800's early 1900's time period?

Did you ever managed to find if there was such a thing.  As I am looking to find out about Redford Green School, Kirkhope.

Hello Worth,

I quote my own reply to another enquirer about this area - Isobel.

"There may be a board carved with the names of past heidies. Some local school have one. If not, your best bet for school records, if the school itself does not have them, would be Scottish Borders Council Archives - start looking here; http://www.scotborders.gov.uk/libraries/ . This service is moving from Selkirk to Hawick in the new year. So perhaps you should contact them quick."

Just out of interest, which school are you interested in?

Keep in touch about your enquiries,

Philip

Thats the problem i don't know which school they attended, i know the children where all born and schooled in Selkirk from the census. I have contacted the Scottish Border Archives and they sent me an application form for a search, i think though that they will have to check every school log book in that area to find them.

Dawn

There are three primary schools and a High School in Selkirk now. If you know where they lived, this might help the search, assuming they went to the local school.

Out of interest, what period are we talking about?

I'm interested in the late 1800's early 1900 time period, they were all born in the 1870's and 1880's so they were all at school in  this time period. They lived in the Castle Street area/Kirkwynd area of Selkirk according to the census.

The nearest school now to those streets is St Joseph's Primary School (Catholic) which is very small. You can see a picture, but not much else, here http://www.stjosephps.org.uk/

The building looks the right age, but who can tell. It probably wasn't an RC school then and would have had another name. Have you followed this up with the folk at the SBC Archives?

I have e-mailed them a few times but no one ever seems to reply back.
I might give them a ring if nothing happens this time.

hi
the new scottish borders archive centre is opening in hawick at the end of may.  I went for a lokk on the open day a few weeks ago and it looks good.  they said that all the archive info for the scottish borders will be kept there, not just those for hawick.

I saw a list the other day that indicated that the Hub Record office at Hawick kept all the old school records for all the local border schools as i was also looking for Ettrick schools.
I think the list was produced by Borders council indicating the schools  and the years which had been passed to the Hub.
