Cambs FHS has a baptism index on its website http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html
but I can't find any James Nic... baptised at Downham.

Have you found him on any censuses?

I found information on Freecen site .1851 census Yester East Lothian.
James Nichol was my greatgrandfather x2.On the census it states his birthplace as Downham but the family were Presbyterian and he may have been baptised at Falstone not sure.
He married Dorothy Redpath and emigrated to South Australia in 1854.The info on Freecen site ties up with family letters I have from Scotland.He was gamekeeper on the estate of the Marquis of Tweeddale.
