1841 Amersham Lookup please
« on: Wednesday 26 October 05 10:32 BST (UK) »

Just discovered that my long-lost Gregorys came from Amersham.

I'd be very grateful for any help in finding them in 1841.

In 1851 the following were living in High Street, Amersham:

William Gregory,  a miller
with son William, also a miller.

William in 1841 should be about 57.

If another son, Henry, unmarried, also a miller, could be persuaded to be at home, anyone who finds him will get a BIG thank you!  (Have so far searched 3 counties for him!)

Thank you.

Epo,
Thank you so much.
I have been looking for Henry, a miller, father William, for years.  Problem was that he died before 1851, wife and baby son moved back to her previous home, so I was at a brick wall.
I think this family is right - age about right for his marriage - so very many thanks for your time and effort!

You're quite welcome. I do think this is the right family. For the 1841 census, all ages 15 and over were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 year multiple.  So ages shown as 15 may be 15-19, 20 may be 20-24, and so on. Also, if someone said they were 60, past 59, the age would probably be shown as 60 even though it should have been recorded as 55. I'm sure they didn't always follow the rules on recording ages. I'm also sure it's possible they rounded up instead of down sometimes.
