Hi there Amy
Found these in the “Notice / Intention of Marriage” Index for Hastings:
23rd July 1868. Baptist Chapel, Hastings. Frank Kitcher, Batchelor, Carpenter & Joiner, aged 24 Frances Jenner, Spinster, aged 30 Both of 1 Pelham Street, St Mary in the Castle, Hastings.
7th April 1876, The Memorial Chapel, Hastings Frank Kitcher, Widower, Carpenter, aged 31 of 3 St Georges Road, Hasting Mary Ann Piper, Spinster, Domestic Servant, aged 29 of Meadow Bank. Lower Norwood
It looks like it is the same person in both marriages.
Hope they are of use

One question though Jane, what does the B in brackets means? I know BT will be Bishops Transcripts, is (B) Banns??

HI Chris, Re-reading this thread it struck me that you said "intention of marriage" does the fact that a Frank Kitcher does not appear on the marriage index mean that he did not actually get married?

Hi Amy
It is a bit confusing, but these were people who applied to get married at the registry Office or in a non conformist place of worship where the registrar was there to record the event - sometimes the event did not take place though.
It does not include those who married by normal means, i.e, calling of Bans, applying for a licence in an ordinary church - they will be listed in the church registers.
Hope that helps to clear it up

Amy
Now you are getting confused
1. The Sussex Marriage index only goes up to 1837
2. The Notices / Intentions of Marriage index for Hastings - starts at 1837
Jane quoted from the first, I quoted from the 2nd.

Yes I was confused. Now I'm ok. I think!!
Initially I thought that Frank couldn't have married either woman YOU gave me because he wasn't mention with the info JAN gave me. Then I realised that JAN's info only went to 1837 and YOUR info was 30+ years later!!
I got there in the end. Talk about flogging a dead thread!!
