How I created my website
« on: Thursday 27 October 05 22:10 BST (UK) »

I Thought I would give you me experience building my website http://bingham.rootschat.net

Unfortunately I did not have any old photo’s, letters, books, etc. to put on the site. Therefore it  only has text of data from BMD and census. The web contains the ancestors and their families of myself and my wife.

The programs I used were  Legacy 5 for the information, GEDMill to create the web pages, KSTableau to create charts and Free FTP Manager to upload to RootsChat.

Legacy 5 was the best program I could find that would hold the BMD and census data. I had to experiment with how to input the census data such that GEDMill produced the right page information. I exported the data to a gedcom 5.5 file in a working folder for input to GEDMill.

GEDMill has an initial option to select which  people (such as living) to ignore. Unfortunately this data has to be entered every time. I therefore created a Legacy file consisting only of my ancestors, deleting all living people or removing possible sensitive data. This meant I did not have to ignore any people each time I generated the web pages. GEDMill outputs to a newly created folder each time, therefore no extra files must be put in this folder unless copies are held elsewhere. I also specified a folder name of lower case characters and no spaces to avoid problems when transferring to a UNIX system.

I then used KSTableau to generate an ancestral chart for myself. The output file that contains the chart was then renamed. KSTableau was run again this time for my wife’s chart. Again the output was renamed. I used the KSTableau option to specify the text link (in lower case) such that only the chart would be produced. These charts were then modified to remove various unwanted links, change titles, etc. and copied into the GEDMill folder.

The GEDMIll index.html file was copied into the working folder and modified. I again changed titles etc. and added a second starting individual. The starting individuals were changed to link to the newly created charts. The background was changed to the same as the GEDMill pages for consistency. A link to RootsChat was added of course! This new index.html file was then copied back into the GEDMill folder.

Free FTP Manager was easy set up to connect to RootsChat using the site manager. Once connected to the site it was just a case of dragging the contents of the GEDMill folder to the remote site. DoubleClicking a file also transfers a file, in either direction. The site was then viewable in my browser. A feature I particularly like with Free FTP Manager is to right click a file and select edit. If the file is local then an editor (specified in the EDIT>SETTINGS option) is opened with the file. If the file clicked is a remote file then it is downloaded first and then uploaded automatically after ending the edit!

Once the site was up and running I added the counter and guestbook as per RootsChat ever helpful topics. I did have one problem with uploading up the guestbook DAT file. It would not go. I renamed it to PHP (for example),  uploaded it and then rename it back to DAT. (Why did it fail?). Changing the guestbook file to 666 as per instructions was easy using the right click file attributes feature.

There is an annoying problem with the site at the moment in that the footer added by RootsChat to the chart pages does not display correctly. I have a topic on the go looking for a fix.

I hope this makes sense and contains some tips to help other members create their own web sites.
