From The Times, Oct.24, 1914, p.3, col.A.
According to the writer, the following name changes had been noticed:
Keifferheim to Trowbridge
Bernheimer to Palmer
Haubnitz to Howard
Muller to Miller
Schworm to Millington.
Go figure....!

My favourite name change is still this one:
".. Abraham ben Isaiah, otherwise known as Moses Abraham Groomsfelt, or Jones, a silversmith .." More about him, and various possible name changes in the Topic: Sharing Useful Tips: GERMANY and E. Europe http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,11860.0.html

Hi,
This has a been a real "hum doosey" for me as the name changes make finding traces even more difficult if the name adopted is a common one.
I have members of the Oppenheim family in Lancashire and Cheshire who changed their names to Osborne before, during and after WWI.
If you find some evidence for a name change and want to see if there was some public notic of the event ( a legal requirement in some cases) you can check the Gazettes online which has helped me enormously:
http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/
I searched for the original name and after some time consuming but rewarding reading found the notices I was looking for.
Hope this helps.
Kirsten
