I'm wanting to find out what, (if anything) is written on monuments in St Peter's Cransford, for a Simon BAKER, buried 7th Oct 1854 and/or Simon BAKER buried 4th Jul 1872 in St Peter's Bruisyard.
I've hit a brickwall with our Simon. According to the 1841 & 1851 census he was born in Bruisyard about 1809. He married Hannah SMITH in Cransford in 1832 and in the record in the Cransford PR's he was "of this parish". The LDS film for Bruisyard only goes up to 1796 so I have been unable to look at the Parish Records myself for his baptism/birth. Someone did a lookup for me (via another website) and I was told that there was a Simon BAKER baptised July 1810 in Bruisyard. Father was Simon BAKER and mother was Lydia. She gave me some names and dates for other children born to Simon and Lydia.
Here is where the brickwall lies. I can find no records of this Simon and Lydia Baker. I can't find anything on any of the census. Nothing on the IGI and there isn't anything in the Bruisyard or Cransford PR's. No marriages or births.
There is however a Simon BAKER who married an Elizabeth GORMAN in Cransford in 1803. This Simon and Elizabeth appear in every census until Elizabeth dies and Simon remarried aged in his 80's and lived to 93 and was buried in Bruisyard in 1872. This Simon was born in Framlingham. I have a settlement certificate for them which shows that they were living in Bruisyard at the time of my Simon's birth in 1809/1810.
Could Elizabeth and Lydia be the same person? I'm hoping that there might be some clue on the Simons' monuments to indicate a connection somewhere. For some reason I feel that the Simon and Lydia aren't ours. Everything points to Simon and Elizabeth being my Simon's parents but I can't find that absolute proof one way or t'other.
Hoping that someone can help me in any way.
Alison

Hi Alison
Had a couple of hours or so to spare this morning so thought I'd go and have a look in the churchyards at Carnsford and Bruisyard and see if I could find anything of use to you.
I regret to say that I drew a blank at both churches. I didn't see a Baker mentioned at either
Both churchyards are somewhat overgrown and this morning they were distinctly damp and the light was none too good. The older memorials have lots of lichen growing on them. Not really the ideal conditions for tomb seeking!
I don't suppose you have any idea of the location of the memorials do you? Do you know the trade or profession of these 2 Simons? Are they likely to have to have had memorials?
Let me have any additional information you have which might be of use and I'll have another look for you when I'm passing by. I'll try and get my daughter to come with me, she seems to be lucky/skilled at finding tombstones.
Pete

Hi Pete,
Thank you so much for having a look for me. It was very generous of you. I'm afraid I don't have any more information about the memorials, if in fact they exist at all. The Simon who died in 1854 was a husbandsman. His father Simon, who died in 1872 in Bruisyard was a Thatcher. It didn't occur to me that they may not have a monument at all. Common sense should have told me that they may have been too poor to afford any permanent memorial. I got the dates of burial from the NBI. Unfortunately the LDS films for both Bruisyard and Cransford don't cover the dates they were buried.
The Cransford Simon was born in Bruisyard around 1809 and was married to Hannah. He is in Cransford for the 1841 and 1851 census before he died in 1854. In 1851 they are living next door to Fiddler's Hall where his 15 year old son Simon (yes another one!) is a servant. He had 7 children born between 1833 and 1844. Mary, William, Simon, Anne, Eliza, James & Elizabeth.
The Bruisyard Simon was born in Framlingham around 1787. He was married to Elizabeth (nee GORMAN) in about 1803 in Bruisyard. Elizabeth died in Bruisyard between 1851 and 1861. In the 1871 census he has re-married to a Hannah and is living at Friday Street, Bruisyard. I'm not sure of any children as I'm not 100% sure that this Simon is my Simon's father. Hence the search for some information from the burial.
It was a long shot anyway, and I thank you again for trying for me. I guess my search for a sledge hammer to knock down this brickwall continues......
Cheers, Alison
