Edward STAGG baptism Great Bedwyn 1832 HELP please!
« on: Monday 31 October 05 09:39 UTC (UK) »

I am hoping some kind soul can help me find the baptism of Edward STAGG, born in 1832 in Great Bedwyn.  I 'think' I found Edward in the 1841 census in Martin Wiltshire, to parents John and Maria.  But I need confirmation that this is MY Edward... as there is at least another Edward STAGG, but this one born in Marlborough.

The Edward STAGG I need, is the one who married Harriete EAGLE in about 1856, and had John STAGG in Burtridg in 1857.

I would appreciate any help if anyone has access to Great Bedwyn Parish Registers, or if it is my Edward in the 1841, it says his father was born in Wilton, so any Wilton parish registers either?

I have tried the IGI and found several other children by John and Maria, but not Edward  Huh

I would really appreciate any help, thanks.

Hi,

The Christening of Edward Stagg to John and Maria was recorded in Trowbridge Wiltshire on 8 Jan 1832.  This couple had other children, one of which was Christened in Great Bedwin. Do you know of them or any of their names to confirm he is yours? Let me know if you want their details

Kind Regards,

Grin Wow that was a fast response, thanks.

This is the mystery, as there are two Edward Stagg in the 1841 in Wiltshire at around the same age.

I am going by the 1861 Census that has Edward Stagg with wife Harriett and John Stagg as the son.  This matched with what I know, my gggf Edward Stagg married Harriet Eagle, and had my ggf John Stagg in 1857.  So I am *pretty* sure he is mine.  And IF he is mine, it says he was born in Great Bedwyn in 1832.

I would appreciate any information you can give me, and your opinion on whether you think this is my guy or not hehe.  I wonder when they got married then, or did I see it on the IGI  Huh

Lucky we love mysteries or we wouldn't be here  Grin

Hi,

First af all I thought I would see if I could find the John that was the son of Edward and Harriet. I found this one who had a sister called Elizabeth Christened same place on 15 Oct 1854.

This John Stagg was Christened 19 Jan 1857 in Burbage, Wiltshire

Do you have any certificates? It is the sure way of proving your family and they give more information to go back to the next generation.

If you have not already looked at thes sites you may find them useful.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

This one has the full registers from 1837. It is free to search but there is a fee to view the pages.

http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/LogonServlet

I will forward to you the siblings of John and Maria, and will also see what else I may be able to find.

Kind Regards,

Thanks again Frances  Grin

I do appreciate you checking on John, so that you seem to have come to the same conclusion as me.  I *think* I have the birth certificate for my aunty, but she has it so I have to see if she can find it hehe.

I looked at freebmd to try and find the marriage of Harriet Eagle and Edward Stagg, but no luck.  I have only a few credits left at 1837.com and as the register is divided into quarters, it could take what I have and more  Shocked

But now that you mention it, it makes me more convinced that that is my John STAGG, so it stands to reason it is my Edward STAGG in the 1861, as there are no others with a wife named Harriet etc.

So I guess if I can find the wedding of Edward and Harriet, it would list their father's names, so I would know Edward STAGG'S father's name is John.  So first step would be to find the marriage certificate and order it, you think?

I really appreciate all your help, you have been great.  I hope to be able to help others and continue the cycle  Grin

I just wish my Devon ANDREWS were as easy.. can't go any further cos it only lists the mothers married name on the baptism cos it is in 1825, and there are more then one couple with the same names.

It is weird, here in Wiltshire, STAGG is a common name, with STAGGs all over the place.  Same with ANDREWS in Devon LOL.

But if it was easy, we'd probably bore too easily hehe.

I am grateful for anything you can tell me.  I will pass it on to my aunty who has been doing this for years and marvels at what can be done over the net hehe.

Grin  Thanks so much

Thanks that is so great, now I can look at 1837online and get the index number without wasting all my credits.

Thanks for everything.  I gotta go to bed now as it is 10:25pm in Australia :-)

I really appreciate it and can't wait to tell my aunty.  How did you find out, or was it in the Parish records?

Grin

Thanks for the date and info, I found the index number at 1837online.com.  And I just found Henry Spackman EAGLE's baptism on the IGI  Grin

SPACKMAN has an ancestral file going back to the 1600's but would have to check it up of course.

Thanks again.  I only wish my devon research was this easy hehe.  I really do appreciate your help and look forward to what you can find.

This is an old query that I found using Google to locate Burtridg, Wiltshire. Surprisingly I had to hand the very people mentioned in this dialogue between aussiegalx and Frances. I have other data relating to the family and my link is with Edwards younger brother Nathaniel.

What I am interested in?

From aussiegirlx who emigrated to Australia and when?

From Frances do you have similar data to me going back to Anthony Stagg born 1722 in Easton Royal? This data was given to me and is not my research but is reputed to be accurate.

Hopefully this gets flagged up on your account.
Best regards

Hi
I believe I am related to your family. My Great Grandfather was John Stagg son of Edward & Harriett (nee Eagle).
