There is a very good website which demonstrates what CSS is capable of.
http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=/177/177.css&page=0
On that page is a list of CSS files. Click on one and the CSS file is loaded and it controls how the page looks.
There are loads of CSS files to view and they may give you ideas for your own sites.
As you will see the different CSS files give totally different looks to the page. (The HTML file is the same for every CSS file) All the changes you see are the result of the CSS file.
That page is just a demonstration of what can be done. Most people just use CSS to give all their pages the same "corporate identity".

Even without using CSS, there's some great inspiration in the example sites. Maybe I'll have to save CSS for my next decade's learning programme though!

I'm also a big fan of CSS.
Most people just use CSS to give all their pages the same "corporate identity". Well, that's what I did for the SIT and the "1901 leftovers" sites - used the RootsChat CSS file to give them a RootsChat "look and feel". Still need to change them to the new RootsChat "look", but that's mainly changing the CSS files rather than the texts.
On my web site I went one step further:
I use different CSS files on my website, so that I can use the same files HTML file for the screen and printer presentation. You can see the results (only he beginning of the home page so far, I'm still working on it) on my site, by comparing the screen version with the "print preview"
And by editing a few lines in the CSS files I can also produce the "family" versions (for my hypertext book, which I burn onto CD), with lots of private info, which doesn't show on the web !
Very much to be recommended - but you need to know your way around HTML to get the best advantages.

I bought myself a book - HTML Utopia: Designing without tables Using CSS a couple of months ago to teach myself CSS. I was so impressed with the websites that use and the concept.
One day I might get time to read the book!!

The email last night prompted me to get the book out and think about going through it. Any useful tips I will most certainly pass on!

Hi Kerry,
The email last night prompted me to get the book out and think about going through it. Any useful tips I will most certainly pass on! Great !!!
One small tip, though, for some of the more fanciful bits: keep an eye out for sentences like ".. but many browsers do not support this function yet" or similar formulations
The ideas in CSS are running ahead of the browser implementations, - I've tried several things because they looked good on paper, but then found that the browser couldn't handle it.
Have fun ! Bob

Hi
I've been using a site called
http://www.htmldog.com
which not only has basic, intermediate and advanced tutorials in html and css but a comprehensive list of html tags and css properties, with clear explanations. It also tells you which browsers won't do what. I've been using it for all the web pages I've written so far and I found it really straghtforward. It's a bit sniffy about anyone who doesn't use CSS but that's a small price to pay.
Having been taught 10 minutes worth of html in August by my son, everything else I've done has been courtesy of this site (shameless plug coming up - look at my new website http://veronspeople.rootschat.net/) so if I can do it, there's hope for anyone.
Cheers
Veron
