Desperately Seeking James and Mary
« on: Thursday 03 November 05 08:45 GMT (UK) »

This is my first venture into Dorset and I'm not entirely sure I am in the right place ... However

I have a family for whom I have many dates and events but NO locations. The information comes from a family bible (which I have never seen) - the dates being given to me by my mother.

I am looking for any records which will verify the information. I have found some possibilities on the 1851 Census which initially led me to Dorset. I have since found a little more through the Dorset Parish Clerks (many thanks for the links) but would love some help to find the missing links.

For the most recent
Henry Miles  b. October 5 1821  married Elizabeth Butler  b. Mar 16 1822. they married Sep 23 1848 St Mary's Church, Paddington Middlesex. Henry was a builder, his father James was a builder. Mary's father Thomas Butler was a Servant. Presumably the fathers were living as the certificate indicates nothing else. The witnesses were William Butler (brother of Elizabeth?) and Jane Miles - definitely a sister of Henry.

Henry and Elizabeth arrived in Australia in 1850, so there is no more to be known of them from England. I have most of the information up to the current day for the Australian branch.

I have a note that says the parents of Elizabeth Butler were Thomas and Mary. I know nothing else about them. I haven't been able to locate/verify them via census or parish records.

Henry Miles parents were James Miles born 3 Jul 1779 the son of Thomas Miles and Mary
and Mary Bullen, daughter of John and Catharine Bullen born May 12 1784.
Mary died June 20 1858 (many possibilities on freeBDM) so should be somewhere on the 1851 Census. I do not know when James died. They married July 9, 1811
The children of James and Mary

Eleanor May 7 1812
Josiah Jan 14 1814
Thomas Bullen Aug 21 1815
Edwin Sep 19 1817
Emma (twin of Edwin)
Maria Aug 9 1819
Henry as mentioned
Lois Ann Jan 9 1823
Jane (witness) Dec 28 1825

I have found some data and will post it on a separate entry. If anyone has time to look for more - or has information on the family - would be fabulous.

I think this is Josiah in 1851 - which led me to dorset
Josiah Miles abt 1814  Milberry, Dorset Head
Mary Miles abt 1845  Old Windsor, Berkshire Daughter
Sarah Miles abt 1818  Chilton, Wiltshire Wife
Old Windsor  Berkshire

Free BDM Marriages Mar 1851
Miles  Lois Ann    Shaftesbury
Parsons  Henry Charles     Shaftesbury
1851 gives Lois Ann Parsons born Cann

And the following Cann Baptisms from the Parish Clerks
17 May 1826  Henry son of  James & Mary  Miles; miller; French Mill; 5 years
17 May 1826 Lois Ann daughter of  James & Mary Miles; miller; French Mill; 2 years
17 May 1826 Jane daughter of  James & Mary  Miles; miller; French Mill;

But I can't find Mary and James in 1851.

This looks to be very true  Grin  Although no Henry - must have been out of sight out of mind!

Thank you so much for reading my long essay and finding some of the family for me. Much appreciated.

Our Henry lived to be 93 years old - so long lives must have been a family speciality.

And on checking about 250 Thomas Butlers(taking into account Elizabeth was born 1822) so he would have to have been born at least before 1806 you would think i found many with birth dates of right time but all ag Lab, bricklayers as occupation, or not married to a Mary......so eventually came up with this gentleman who seems to have all right credentials.

Thomas Clifford Butler 45 Widower Butler  b Kent

1851 Census fo St James Westminster
Living at 30 St James Place
          HO 107/1484 page 38
So Maybe someone with the 41 census for same area can track him back to 41 census and see if he is in situ with Mary,Elizabeth and maybe a William. You never know maybe a direct hit!!!!  Grin

Wow Cheryl - you are a star  Grin  Grin  Grin

I have been doing the easy ones  Smiley  and have found Edwin through to 1901 - so he lived a long life as well. In 1891 he is living in the same street as one of the sons - so coming into Dorset seems to have been a good option - although they all seemed to move around alot.

Many thanks

Thomas Clifford Butler 45 Widower Butler  b Kent

And 6 folks all to look after one widow! What a life. As you say, the 1841 for both families would be very useful. I'll put a query into Middlesex for James.

Thanks

Hi Cheryle.f

Just a note - I think the Thomas Butler you found (many thanks for the effort) is not my man - he is somewhat too young, as it has turned out he probably had children born from 1814 - and even at 1820, he is a bit young. With much help from Genni, I lucked onto him, living next door to one of his sons

name spelt Thommas. The enumerator spelt every Thommas in this area (Wilts) this way!  He was born c. 1782 and Mary his wife was with him.

Thanks again for your help

Thanks Jan

I think I have most of them now - they changed where they were born almost every census - just to give me something to do but then we found the lovely Josiah who stayed in the one place for 50 years & had a different niece living with him every 10 years - a lovely man.  Grin  Grin
