1901 address look up please for Grimsby
« on: Saturday 28 August 04 00:27 BST (UK) »

Please would it be possible to look up 19 Sixhill Street , Grimsby.  I am trying to find Jane Groves widow born Swaby in 1858 and her two sons John Groves born Grimsby 1880 and George born 1884 Grimsby.  I have had no luck finding them but on Johns wedding certificate in 1904 his address is 19 Sixhill Street, Grimsby !  Where did they disapear to !

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Hi Lynn,

I've not been able to find them on the 1901 census but this certainly looks like them on the 1891 Smiley

Ref:RG12/2619  Folio 24 page 41

Civil Parish:Clee with Weelsby

Municipal borough:Grimsby

Living at 19 Sixhill Street

Jane Groves,Head,33,widow,charwoman,b.Swaby
John,Son,10,scholar,b.Grimsby
George,son,7,scholar,b.Grimsby
WilliamSpencer,Lodger,Married,49,pedler/hawker,b.dudley

So at least they were  living in Sixhill Street  Smiley

I will have another look on the 1901 for you, hope this helps,Mick Wink

Hi,

OK, I think I've found them.

I wondered if Jane Groves had married again and found the following on the free to view civil registration pages:

1894 - Caistor - March qtr - marriages volume 7a page 1048

Atkin, Joseph
Bannister, Mary Ann
Bradley, John William
Groves, Jane

I still couldn't find Jane with a birthplace of Swaby, so I searched for Joseph Atkin, and look who was at 19 Sixhill Street, Grimsby, in 1901.

(RG13/3092 folio 117 page 2)
Joseph Atkin, head, marr, age 41, stoker in gas works, born Thornton Abbey, Licns
Jane Atkin, wife, age 42, born White Pit, York
John Atkin, son, age 20, ship fireman, born Grimsby
George Atkin, son, age 17, saw mill labourer, born Grimsby
Elizabeth Overton, visitor, single, age 35, living on own means, born Grimsby

The census return does seem to say 'White Pit, York' for Janes birthplace, but check out the map on this link - there is a White Pit next to Swaby in Lincolnshire (http://www.ukvillages.co.uk/ukvillages.nsf/villages/England/White+Pit-Lincolnshire)

If you want the census image send me a private message with your email address and I'll send it to you.

Thanks everybody for all this help for my lost family.   Obviously she has remarried and changed their name.   When John married his address was given as 19 Sixhill Street but name changed back to John Groves.

I cant thank you all enough, youve made my day.
