Genni, I am on tenterhooks!
Update: today received Augustine's marriage cert - 1911 to Daisy DONELL in Boston , Lincolnshire (have already found her info & she is descended from an Ide family we think).
Gus's father is "John LEWIS cabinet maker, deceased". Witnesses don't seem very helpful - Daisy's father & sister, plus E E BARRETT and J H DONINGTON. Probably too far from any census to identify them with any certainty.
Will be sending for Gus's birth cert as soon as I get a moment, and will update when it arrives.
kind regards, Arranroots

I am confused! I'll be glad to await the birth cert buttttttttttt can you please confirm that your first posting was wrong?
Augustine (born 26 JUL 1870) Since an 8 month old baby in the 1881 census doesn't fit with this Mary
Think I'm going to have to draw a little tree otherwise I'm also confusing myself with the two sides of the family. Are there just the two threads about Hermon and Augustus? or are there any more hiding?

Sorry Mary - finger trouble! Should read Augustine born 1880 I believe.
There are just 2 threads: my original intention being to deal with Gus on one and Hermon's Canadian adventures on the other. but you know how carried away we all get!
There are 3 children in the family - Hermon born in the "early 1870s", Fanny and Augustine.
The original info I had gave birth dates for the latter 2, but nothing for Hermon. Will re-read the threads and check that they tally in due course.
Meanwhile I am supposed to be hosting a party any minute, so better get a shift on! Promise to return and recheck later.

As those of you following the HOOKINGS end of this story will be aware, I have been reduced to purchasing the birth certs. No joy as far as the father is concerned - unnamed.
Mother is Margaret LEWIS (doesn't say formerly HOOKINGS interestingly) and the address is Littleham.
All I need now is for Ancestry to come back online (GRR) and I will try to find her at least.
Ho Hum!

Hi Arranroots
Regarding birth certificates for both Augustine & Hermon - do they a street address.
Augustine's said Littleham but is there a particular address?
Cheers Genni

Hi again Genni!
For Augustine I have Market Street, Littleham. No number or house name. That's for the birth and the residence of the informant (Margaret HOOKINGS mother).
Hermon's says Exeter Road, Crediton
Have posted a look-up for Herman's marriages, if you have been following that side of the story?
Wish me luck!

Checked the addresses in 1881 census
No Margaret or John Lewis living Market Street Littleham.
But There is a Phillips family living in Exeter Road, Crediton. William Phillips and Family, possibily Ann Hookings brother??
Yes, I have been following the other thread as well.
Some families are very intriguing, to say the least!!!!!
Cheers Genni

Intriguing is one word!
Just noticed there are 2 Littlehams in Devon, but I will get down to looking at the families now (bit of a late start today!)
You will have seen the correspondence about Fanny, so maybe she belonged to this family?

Yes, I didn't realise Hermon was born in Exeter Road, how interesting! I've just updated this family of William and Lucy from 1851 to 1901 so check it before you do any further searches, it may save you some time.

Further developments, in the form of certs that arived today (only a few days after ordering: well done GRO!!)
Fanny was the daughter of Margaret HOOKINGS a dressmaker. Born at 1 James St, Exeter. No father mentioned.
Margaret HOOKINGS, dressmaker died of pulmonary tuberculosis and hectic fever in Aug 1885. Her aunt PHILLIPS reported the death.
So it seems that Margaret was supported by her parents (in 1881) and her aunt, but that she either never married or rejected Jack and reverted to her middle name. It is possible that Jack was violent towards her and his son (family story).
I have passed on my findings to my friend, but if anyone knows or discovers ANYTHING in future that might lead to the discovery of Jack, please let me know. It would set the story straight for him.
many thanks to those who have followed the search...so far!

Final Update?
Today received the marriage certificate of Fanny HOOKINGS and Edward HORE in 1905. No father's name is given for Fanny!
This is terribly frustrating and I now don't think the mystery of Fanny & Gus's paternity can be solved. I am proposing that Jack LEWIS (the one who married Clara) is the only man with the right names to be Gus's father - but could be entirely wrong as Gus might just have made up a name for his own marriage certificate.
Anyone still with me?
Many thanks to all for their time & trouble.

Such a shame Arranroots, but I'm sure friend will be delighted with the huge amount of information that you have managed to collect together, quite a feat in itself considering the lack of detail you started out with.
Well done, it's been a successful project even without its final conclusive proof.
