emigration to USA after 1924
« on: Saturday 28 August 04 10:15 BST (UK) »

I am looking for the emigration details refering to my grandparents Walter and Dorothy Cox who emigrated to New York in the late 1920's. I am not sure of their port of departure, but am working on the probability that it was southampton as they were born and lived in south hampshire. I have seen the ellis island site but their details only seem to go up to 1924. Could anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you.

Aliens applying for admission at U.S. Ports of Entry presented their visa to an Immigrant Inspector, who took up the visa for filing. Non-Immigrant visas were filed at the port. Both Quota and Non-Quota Immigrant visas were forwarded for filing at INS Headquarters in Washington, D.C., where they remain today. Immigrant visas contain valuable genealogical information, including exact date and place of birth, names of parents and children, all places of residence for five full years prior to immigration, and a photograph. Furthermore, visas usually have vital documents attached. Immigrant Visa Files for those aliens admitted for permanent residence after July 1, 1924, may be requested under the Freedom of Information/Privacy Act.

The above information is from the Immigration & Naturalization web site.
The address given for requesting Visa information is:
Director
Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act Program
425 Eye Street NW, 2nd Floor
ULLICO Building
Washington, DC 20536 USA

As both Walter and Dorothy were both "aliens" on the 1930 census, and had not arrived until 1926, 1928 respectively, they would not have had time to apply for naturalization, but may have done at a later date.

Might be worth a letter.

Sorry, I'm not able to help with a ship passenger list.

Regards,

Thanks Valerie, I think it may well be worth a letter.
