Sharman 1841, 1851 Baslow, Calver, Bakewell
« on: Wednesday 06 October 04 09:27 BST (UK) »

Hi,
would it be possible for someone to look up Mary Sharman in the 1841 and 1851 census?
She was born in Bubnell about 1810 although the place of birth may say Baslow or Bakewell.
She married a Joshua Read of Stockport so may be listed under his name.
I would love to know if there were any other Sharmans, except Thomas born about 1800, living in calver, Bakewell, Baslow who were born before 1820 and living in the area at the 1841 and 1851 census.
Regards

I'm curious about your Mary and Joshua Read..........am I right in saying you don't know when they married or where? do they have children? and does any Sharman's ever stop with them?
Am I also correct in saying that you don't know if Sharman is her maiden name or name from a previous marriage?...........if that is correct I have a candidate

1841 census

Shotteswell, Warwickshire.........132/9
William Sharman  39  Y
Mary          "         30  N (not born in county)
+ 5 children (Hannah is the youngest at 9 months) and a young lady by the name of Ada Masters aged 2.

*A William Sharman died in the March qtr of 1842 in Banbury (thats what Shotteswell comes under) but it doesn't give his age............4 candidates, William aged 39, his son William aged 3 or two others living in Shotteswell aged 1 & 4 in 1841

If you have more info that you haven't revealed? it might help in sorting out what you have so far?

Hi Bryant,

many thanks for your help.

My problem is that Thomas Sharman who you found in Bubnell in 1841 was staying with this Mary Read in 1861. He was listed as a visitor.

Thomas's grandson George, who is the son of John Sharman who you found in Calver in 1841, was staying with the same Mary Read in 1871. On the census return he was listed as nephew.

Mary Read was too old to be the daughter of Thomas Sharman but could be a sister I don't know about.

I just can't trace her or her marriage.

Regards

Sandra

Lets see if we can condense this a little bit..........in 1841

1841 census
BUBNELL, BAKEWELL, DERBYSHIRE
THOMAS SHARMAN  40  AG LAB   Y
ANN             "           40                Y
THOMAS       "           10                Y
MARY            "            8                 Y

RICHARD      "             5                 Y
WILLIAM FROGGATT  11                Y
-------------------
1841 AS ABOVE
GEORGE SHARMAN  15  M.S   Y
---------------------
1841 CALVER, BAKEWELL, DERBYSHIRE
JOHN SHARMAN  20  AG LAB   Y---------------------
1851 census
BUBNELL, BAKEWELL, DERBYSHIRE (or somewhere round it)
THOMAS SHARMAN  53  AG LAB   Y
ANN             "           54                Y
THOMAS       "           20                Y
REBECCA      "          15                 Y
-------------------
1851
JOHN SHARMAN  28
JANE        "          25
ANN         "           1
GEORGE   "           2 months
-------------------
1851
MARY SHARMAN  19
-------------------
Question........... how do you know that George is the son of John, only I took the 1851 info from Sunflower's reply!

It is always better to display the info you have on your post.......for example..I see no mention of Mary Read's age within the post!
Why can't Mary Read be Mary Sharman as seen in 1841 & 1851? that would make Mary the Aunt of George......providing she was head of household in 1871

Hi Bryant,

Firstly George was with John and his wife Jane Sharman in the 1851 census aged 2 months and the 1861 census when he was 10. John, Jane and George lived in Calver.

In 1871 he was in Adswood Cheadle with Mary aged 62 and Joshua Read aged 57.  Mary was born in Bubnell and George in Calver. George was down as her nephew. from this census Mary would have been born around 1809.

In 1871 Mary the daughter of Thomas Sharman (Grandfather of George and father of John) would have only been 38 years old. Mary Read was 62. Both however would have been born in Bubnell.

Bubnell is a tiny hamlet next to Baslow which as far as I can discover didn't have many Sharman families. I just put two and two together and presumed that Mary could have been the sister of Thomas. If she had been the sister of George's Mother then she would have been born in St Austell in Cornwall not Bubnell.

Of course it could have been Joshua who was George's uncle but he was born in Stockport and the Bubnell connection was important.

Similarly in the 1861 census Thomas Sharman of Bubnell was staying with Joshua and  Mary Read. He was called a visitor and no family relationship was given.  In that census Thomas was 62 and Mary Read 52. Both were born in Bubnell.

It all leads to them being brother and sister but I have no proof.

Regards
