Thomas H Watson
« on: Friday 04 November 05 09:29 GMT (UK) »

Thomas H Watson abt 1864  North Shields, Northumberland, England Head

Sarah Nelson abt 1867  Walker, Northumberland, England Daughter

Elizabeth Nelson abt 1885  North Shields, Northumberland, England Granddaughter

John W Nelson abt 1887  North Shields, Northumberland, England Grandson

Alice H Nelson abt 1888  South Shields, Durham, England Granddaughter

Sarah W Nelson abt 1890  South Shields, Durham, England Granddaughter

Mary J Watson abt 1895  Aberdare, Scotland Daughter

Thomas H W Nelson abt 1896  Aberdare, Scotland Grandson

Elizabeth C W Nelson abt 1899  North Shields, Northumberland, England Granddaughter

Can anyone shed any light on this family lived in 5 Elsdon Street Chirton 1901. I think?? According to the census Thomas H Watson is Sarah Nelsons father which seems impossible as he is only 3yrs older. They are both widowed. If anyone knows of this family please let me know

Hi Brian,

Did you get your information from a census?  Could you give a census ref, then some of us may be able to look at the original entry - it may give us more clues Smiley

Regards,

Trini.

I have checked the original on ancestry ref is

It does have Sarah down as his daughter, which is surprising since in 1891 he is aged 27 and single.  Did he marry an older widow in the mean time?

Directly under Thomas's name is Mary J  DAU aged 6, then Sarah and her family.

Hello Brian,

I took a look at the 1891.  Nice for you to find him and all his siblings.  I don't have access to the 1901 actual images, but I would be interested to know what you've found.  To have all those people living in a place in Elsdon Street must have been a treat Sad  For the first two years of my life, I lived there and it was only two rooms with a shared loo outside, until we were re-housed because of slum clearance!

please let us know how you get on with your findings.

Regards,

Trini.

Hi Brian,

Upper Elsdon St still exists, but most of Elsdon St has gone..........no homes there nowadays. I should go down there and take some pics.  I was born at my Grandparents house, but was living there for the first two years of my life, apparently.  However, when I went to school (age 5) a few years later, Elsdon Street had already been transformed.  Where I lived, was already new flats at that time (1960's).

Hi Brian,

Also meant to mention that if your Thomas was born about 1864, there's no way he could have had a Grand-daughter born 1885.  He would only have been 21 years old himself!  As he was single at 27 on the 1891 census, I would be really querying this info.  (I look forward to looiking at the 1901 info - thanks.)

Regards,
Trin.

I looked at the image from 1901 and it does say Daughter, but it looks as if the clerk made a real mess of all of the relationsips, there are two Elizabeths - both daughters.  As I mentioned to Brian in PM, most of the younger children have the middle initial W - perhaps for Watson?

He also mentioned that Thomas and Sarah married in 1902.
