I would really appreciate someone's help or advice please.
I traced my gggf Thomas Taylor ANDREWS from Cullompton Devon in 1825, in the IGI father Samuel ANDREWS, mother Sara. It doesn't list her maiden name and according to the printout of ANDREWS marriages in Devon, there are 2 or 3 that could be the marriage, but none at Cullompton.
I have since discovered that the most likely marriage is Samuel ANDREWS and Sarah CULVERWELL in Culmstock in 1822, as Culmstock is nearby to Cullompton. But I can find no information on Sarah CULVERWELL
On the IGI Samuel and Sara also have a son, Samuel born 1829. But again no mother's maiden name.
I also can't find Samuel ANDREWS or Sarah in the 1841 or 1851 etc, on Ancestry. I have Samuel born 1829 onwards to his death, and his wife and children. I also have Thomas ANDREWS on census from 1851 onwards, plus his death certificate and marriage certificate. But I could not find them in the 1841.
The problem is that there are so many Samuel, Sara and Thomas ANDREWS, that I am really stuck.
Someone else found Thomas ANDREWS in Somerset in 1851 and he had a first wife I didn't know anything about
On the IGI I found a birth of Samuel Taylor ANDREWS born 1799 in Barnstaple. I suspect it is mine for a fwe reasons.
1. My Samuel ANDREWS son, is Thomas Taylor ANDREWS, so it seems too much of a coincidence that they would share the same name, and Barnstaple is not that far from Cullompton, given how far these people travelled back then, especially mine.
2. It listed on the IGI Samuel's parents as Thomas and Sarah. I found a marriage in 1795 in Cullompton Thomas ANDREWS and Sarah TAYLER. Since the son's middle name is Taylor, and for a possible mother's maiden name to be TAYLER
3. A kind soul found on the A2A site, a Samuel ANDREWS as an apprentice in Cullompton in 1810, aged 11!
Now do people think I am jumping to conclusions?
If anyone has access to Barnstaple Parish records around 1799, I'd appreciate some assistance.
I can't find Samuel ANDREWS born in 1799 in the 1841 or 1851 census, and I think he may have died, but am waiting for a burial printout There is one Sarah ANDREWS in Cullompton, but I now think she is Samuel's mother aged 65, born Sarah TAYLER in Cullompton.
But I am at a loss to find Samuel ANDREWS Snr, Thomas ANDREWS his son, and Samuel ANDREWS jnr... or Sarah ANDREWS nee Culverwell. Such common names makes it a nightmare and am at my witz end.
Any advice/assistance is appreciated.
Can anyone help? Being in Australia I do not have access to the Cullompton Parish Registers.... I am hoping someone can help please

Hi have you looked at the Devon Family History Soctiey web site, they have transcribed the baptism records for Cullompton from 1813-1839 it might be worth contacting them. It would probably mean purchasing copies of the transcriptions though. The Devon Family History Society also have a Marriage Index which may be of help to you. regards Muddy

I actually did that but I should have stated 'the printouts from the DFHS.' hehe.
Problem is, there are several Samuel ANDREWS married to a Sarah in the time frame. But there was one in Culmstock that is close to Cullompton and in the Culmstock page, for baptisms in the Wesleyan chapel in Culmstock, see the IGI Baptism for Cullompton. Which means it is possible that my Thomas ANDREWS was baptised in the Wesleyan chapel in Culmstock but included on the reel for Cullompton...
When I saw that, it was like a lightbulb appeared over my head, since this couple was married in Culmstock, and it is possible now my Thomas ANDREWS was baptised there.
So it is just confusing, and difficult without actual access to the Parish records...

I'm afraid Aussiegalx that I do think you are jumping to conclusions. You must bear in mind that 40% of Devon parishes are NOT listed on the IGI - including next door Bradninch. Next week I will have a look at the parish registers at the DRO and see what I can find out for you.

Thank you I do appreciate it.
I am aware of the problems with the IGI, that is why I relied on the printouts of the DFHS baptisms for ANDREWS though mine don't show up, probably cos they were in the Wesleyan chappel.
I am going by the marriage printout from the DFHS, and the baptisms of the DFHS for ANDREWS as well.
I have seen the Cullompton Parish Register Transcription on Genuki for Cullompton and there is no Samuel ANDREWS born at right time. It is just really coincidental that a Samuel ANDREWS does turn up in Cullompton at age 11, with a middle name Taylor which is both son's middle name *Thomas Taylor ANDREWS* and a Thomas ANDREWS married a Sarah TAYLER....
What is family history if not jumping at straws LOL putting the clues together.... It is just that since it is before 1837 it is a lot more difficult to decipher the clues...
I do appreciate your help

The connection between Cullompton and Culmstock is perfectly reasonable because Bradninch, Cullompton and the Culme Valley villages were all heavily involved in paper-manfacturing. Workers were constantly moving between them depending upon the availabilty of work.

The CULMSTOCK parish register reads: Marriage - 30.8.1821 Samuel Andrews otp widower weaver & Sarah Culverwell otp widow. In those days of high deathrate in childbirth young widowers were far from rare. I can find no further entries involving Samuel & Sarah in Culmstock, although Andrews is a common name there, but if they were non-conf. I wouldn't expect to. There appears to be no Weslayan register available. I did a quick look for a possible earlier marriage but without success. In my experience the normal reaction upon the loss of a young wife is that he moves away - a natural enough reaction.
