I thought i had traced my family back to Lochmaben, where William Anderson and Janet Gillespie were married at Smallholm, on 26Dec. 1806, but i have since found another marriage on L.D.S. at Lockerbie for the same two names, in 1808. My definate ancestor is Hugh Anderson, born in 1809 in Ayr, son of William & Janet, does anyone have any more information, that could help me in my search. Thank you for reading this.

Hi Millie,

And a warm welcome to Rootschat.

What do you know about Hugh?

Does he appear on any census 1841 or 1851?

1851 is here...
http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/services/depts/comres/library/census_search.asp

There are only 2 Hugh Andersons one born in Stirling and one born in Kirkcudbright. This covers Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbright and part of Wigtown.

Unless William and Janet where in a trade that would see them travel distances I'd say the Lochmaben and Lockerbie marriages are wrong if Hugh was born in Ayr.  What is Janet's surname?  Anderson is quite common is Janet's?

Cheers,
Pam

hi pam so sorry that my message was so broken up, but thats down to my keyboard jamming. Hugh was the son of WILLIAM and JANET and he was born in Ayr, i have his o.p.r. birth entry, and on this, it is recorded that William was a travelling salesman. The marriage that i mention is also the o.p.r.   I hope this is abit clearer.  Millie

Hi Millie

I think I would trust the OPR before LDS.

Did you get the OPR from Scotlands People? Checking the whole of Scotland? If so, go with them.  I have found loads of mistakes on the LDS site.
