Keenan / Caffrey
« on: Sunday 06 November 05 05:59 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for information on James Keenan who married Mary Caffrey in about 1830. Two sons, Phillip (or Patrick Phillip), bn 1832, and Thomas bn 1838 migrated to Australia in the 1850s. Would like to know if there were other children. I think James had a brother Patrick at Conlanstown. James himself may have had land at Ballysax Hills (Griffith Register). Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Why do you think James  owned land at Ballysax? There was a James at Moorhill, Gilltown too. Would I be right in assuming you are stuck at this point which appears to be the start of your search for this family in Ireland? What makes you think James had a brother Patrick at Conlanstown? Do you have copies of letters from James to Patrick or an old Family Bible containing names and addresses? Your user name is Still looking. Does this mean you have posted on Rootschat previously?

Hi Christopher,

No I haven't posted on RootsChat before. My James Keenan may well be at Gilltown. His son Thomas' death certificate says that James was a veterinary surgeon.

I have been told that his son Phillip (possibly Patrick Phillip) was baptised in the town of Kildare in 1832.

Regards

Hei Still Looking,

I presume the Keenan family were members of the Roman Catholic faith. Has the source that told you Philip Keenan was baptised in the town of Kildare in 1832 substantiated that fact?

Best Wishes, Christopher

Hi Christopher,

Yes, they were Roman Catholic. The aunt who wrote that died about 10 years ago, aged 90. She had visited relatives in Kildare in the 1960s and also said that they thought Phillip had been employed for a while (about 1852) as an under-butler at Shanbally Castle (Tipperary?).  He called his farming properties in Australia “Kildarra” and “Tipperary”.

The link with Patrick of Conlanstown is also unclear. His grandson, Patrick Dawson,  came to Australia to visit his Keenan relations, Phillip’s family, in 1930.

Cheers

Still Looking,

In 1957, The Land Commissioners, with the approval of the Irish Government , proceeded with plans to demolish Shanbally Castle

I read about it on the Net. What a shame! It took 1400 holes filled with explosives to bring it down so it was built to last.

Cheers
