Brierley Wood Colliery, Chesterfield, MOSLEY

Does anyone have any information about the Brierley wood colliery near Chesterfield, which I belive to have been in the ownership of the MOSLEY family around the end of the 19th century.

Also Charles MOSLEY, born 28 Nov 1856, married Harriett and had at least three children. I'm looking for the family name of Harriett, and for news of any of Charles' brothers and sisters? Any help very much appreciated.

Hello, again. I can't find any evidence of a Charles Mosley from Durham with a wife called Harriet. Anyway, Dronfield registers in Chesterfield and in 1891 Charles is living next door to his brother John, who is an Under Manager at a Colliery. Pity it doesn't name it.

So, unless you stop me mid-flight I am going to post the details.

How are you - still enjoying the good life over there?

Tricia, Have I told you before, you are a star! You have found the right family, of that there is no doubt. John was under manager at Brierley Wood colliery in 1903, but I believe had been in a similar post elsewhere before. Brierley Wood is shown as in the ownership of the Mosley brothers in 1903 and I'm keen to find out a little more. Unfortunately I keep coming up against the brick wall of Harriett, she seems impossible to identify, as does Charles' mother. perhaps there were several marriages. Who knows? As for me I'm still enjoying life across the water, and am also involved in several researches on French and German families (if you think English records can be difficult, the French win hands down!) best wishes and many thanks for your help so far. Now, young Harriet.

I have searched around on free resources and found a Charles Mosley marrying in 1878. Unfortunately the name of the spouse wasn't recorded so I looked at Harriet's born 1856 Dronfield and cross checked these against the Charles marriage reference number on 1837online  and no doubt you can guess the result - zero!

So the only option is to send for birth cert of one of the children and luckily the birth of Frank was registered on 1837.

So, send for this certificate and it will give mum's maiden name and we can start all over again. Post what you discover on this thread and I will attempt to find her at home and that wretched missing marriage Smiley
