(COMPLETED) - MENZIES Family (Coal Miners)
« on: Wednesday 11 May 05 07:36 BST (UK) »

John Menzies (Coal Miner) was killed on 11 November 1902.  I am trying to ascertain the name of the coal mine he was killed in and circumstances surrounding the accident.  All I know at this stage is that he was found dead at the 4th Pull No. 5 Pit West Longrigg.  I have searched the Durham Mining Museum, but they only seem to list the names of those killed in mining accidents where 5 or more people were killed.  Can anybody help.

Hi Mollydog,

Try searching on Google for West Longrigg Pit, Stirlingshire.

You'll get tons of sites but you might have to do a lot of reading to find who you're looking for.

Good Luck!

Hello, hope your search was fruitful.

Just beginning to search my wife's lines in Scotland.
Have you ever noticed a Janet Minzies who married a John Leckie in the area of Campsie . Not sure of year but one of her children was born 1805.

Any help appreciated.

John and Janet would probably have married in 1794 although I can't find a marriage for them in Campsie or in Stirlingshire.

Hope this helps.

Hi

Janet Menzies was married to John Leckie a grocer originally from Gargunnock and who settled in Lennoxtown.  John died in 1855 and Janet in 1854 aged 84.  Their daughter Janet died aged 78 in November 1881. All three are buried in Lennoxtown.  Their son William became a farmer in Gooseholm and married Marjory Stevenson in 1840 in Dumbarton.  They had 8 children, all of whom were born in Dumbarton.

John's parents were Alexander Leckie and Helen Keir who married in Balfron 5/12/1767.  If you have any information on Alexander and who his parents & siblings were, I'd love to hear from you.
