Hi kerry - firstly I'd suggest getting the death certificate so you have an exact date to use and whether the death was due to an accident . Then there are a few possible avenues, but as your profile doesn't give your location these may be impractical.

Manchester Central Library has several local newspapers on microfilm you could search for any reports of the accident (if it was such). They do have a paid research service

Greater Manchester Records Office (also in Manchester, but not at the library) has the archives of the Manchester Ship Canal Company. There may be something there

Hi Kerry,

If you would like to read up more on the boats and the Manchester Ship Canal. I recommend "Tugs, Barges and Me" by Jake Abram at £4.25 it is a great book written about the Docks and was very enjoyable.

I too have a bargee in my tree Smiley next place for me to visit is the Boat Museum in Ellesmere Port to find out more.

Regards
