Can you trace your relatives through their NI number and if you can where would you get their number, is there a data base.  The NI contributions started in 1911 I believe

Yes this is a point I have made before about future researchers.  My name has changed several times but my NI number has remained the same.

You cannot access a database of NI numbers and data as this would doubtless contravene the Data Protection Act.  What you can do is get in touch with TraceLine, a DSS department.  You tell them the details of the person you want to trace and if they find him or her, they tell you so, but instead of giving you the details, they offer to forward a letter from you.  This gives the other person the option whether to be in touch with you or not.  My stepbrother found my stepfather this way and made the old fossil very happy.

It might be possible in the future to use NI numbers in resarching "historic" records, i.e those of people long dead.
