John Briscoe born circa 1777
« on: Thursday 01 November 07 16:04 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone help,I've got a large brickwall called John!!! He was born about 1777 and married Elizabeth Piper in 1810,the IGI says July ,however the parish records say May!I cannot find his birth anywhere although I know he came from great shelsey. Is it possible he was a Catholic which is why I cannot find his birth,if so where would I find a record of his birth? Huh His surname was Briscoe,my only other thought is that maybe he was employed at the big house.

hello Sleepybarb
As you have hit a brick wall I think you need to look at what you have. You say you know he came from Great Shelsey, where has this come from?If it on his marriage entry as "of this Parish" one only had to be resident for 3 weeks to qualify.
If he was christened it would have to be in the Parish Church as Catholicsm wasn't
"legalised" until 1829

Thanks for the message,in the parish records it says 'of great shelsey'.But as you say he could have moved there from elsewhere.there is certainly no mention of a baptism at martley on the microfiche I have, also I had a look at the paper copy when I was at the SOG a few weeks ago.Looks like another trip to London and the midlands again .I'd forgotten about the RC 'legalisation'date.Thank you for the new pair of eyes.

The reason I question his birthplace is that there are only 199 Briscoe births registered in Worcs. on IGI with most of those on the other side of the County which today aren't even in Worcs. whereas in Salop. there are over 1600 births.Even if you accept that some are duplicated it would indicate that he may have come from there.
In the Shelsley area there are only 4 births registered & none at all pre. 1810 which would indicate that the family came from elsewhere.Shropshire is next to Worcs.
I wouldn't want you to have a wasted journey.

Morning Jim,yes I've seen some of the Shropshire ones and  am investigating .there's also one from a bit further down ,but a slightly earlier date.We were planning on a holiday up there next summer.I was born up in Birmingham  and used to spend my summers over at Bromyard.I would'nt be in the least bit suprised to find a Salop link,so far we have Gloucster,Warwick, and Hereford!
