WILLIAMS in Devon
« on: Thursday 10 November 05 02:59 GMT (UK) »

I don't have too much on my ggg grandmother Rebecca WILLIAMS.

*MAY HAVE been born in 1814 Torrington (just speculation) as I think some census has her being from there)
*I have that she had a brother Roger, but I don't know how certain that is.
*She married John HARDING.
*She had children Elizabeth Williams (b.28-Jun-1844 Polstraw, Langteglos, Cornwall)
*She signed the birth certificate with an X
*Also had Mary W. who married Francis CORNELIUS
*Possible other children: Rebecca and William James.

Any information and connections welcome!

Hi,

This is the 1851 Census entry (seems to indicate she indeed had a brother
Roger and that she had been married before):

HO107/1898 133 14
Langteglos, Cornwall

John Harding, head, 31, Slate Quarryman, b. Devon Buckland Brown (?)
Rebecca, wife, 38, b. Devon Torrington
Elizabeth, dau, 6, b. Cornwall Langteglos
Mary, dau, 2, b. do.
Rebecca, dau, (7?), b. do.
John Lyne, son in law, unm, 18, Cordwainer, b. Devon Torrington
Roger Williams, brother in law, unm, 26, Slate quarryman, b. Devon Torrington

I see she keeps stating through the census returns that she is from Torrington Devon (exc. 1871 where she is dittoed born Langteglos), and her age is consistant.

By 1861, they have another son, Thomas James, age 5, b. Langteglos.

The IGI has a member-submitted   Undecided christening for her: 2 Apr 1815 , Great Torrington, to Richard William and Ann.

... hope this person was better informed than the one who submitted the birth of Roger Williams: born ca. 1825 to Mr. Williams  Grin

Hi Tanja,
Thanks for those lookups.

I'd love the whole household for 1861 like you copied for 1851, if that's possible!

Odd that a son-in-law was unmarried! Was it that the census taker made an error and should have put married, or was it that son-in-law was used in an unconventional way!? Is that what you meant by it seems that she had been married before? That perhaps John Lyne was Rebecca's son from a previous marriage? Perhaps then I should look for Rebecca Lyne in the 1841 census.

I wonder where they were in 1871?

Rebecca was a widow by 1881, living with her daughter Mary and son in law, Francis CORNELIUS.

cheers,

Son-in-law often stands for stepson. I'd think she was previously married to a Mr Lyne.

1861
RG9/1541 58 4
St Breock, Cornwall
Edmunton
John Harding, head, 40, Plate quarry man, b. Nutlam Devonshire
Rebecca, 47, b. Great Torrington
Rebecca, dau, 10, b. Landigles
Thomas Jas, son, 5, b. do.

and 1871  Cool
RG10/2254 63 7
St Breock, Edmonton, Cornwall

Francis Curnelious (that's what I think it looks like), head, 23 (25?), b. Landeagless
Mary do., wife, 22, b. St Breock
Francis George, do. son, 4, b. Landeagless
Phillip do., boarder, unm, 23, scholar (I promise!), b. do.
Rebecca Harding, M Law, wid, 59, b. do.
Thomas James Harding, B Law, 15, Slate quarry, b. do.
