My Ancestors were Blacksmiths
« on: Thursday 10 November 05 19:36 UTC (UK) »

Has anyone got the time (and patience)  Roll Eyes to have a look at the Parish Records for Filey between 1740-1790? Any reference to a birth, marriage or death would be useful. I am looking for the Chew family specifically any descendent's of Robert Chew who was born before 1740. I would also be grateful for any information about the blacksmith's trade during this period.

There were at least 3 or 4 generations of Chews who were blacksmith's in Filey. The last one I know of was again called Robert who was born circa 1790 but that is only a guess. He married Ann Parkinson in 1816 and their son Robert had a butcher's shop on Queen Street.

I know that at least one if not two families named Chew lived in the village but the strange thing is there are 3 Robert Chew's who married between 1803 and 1816 and their wives were called Ann. Now is that the same Robert marrying 3 times or is it 3 Roberts whose wives were called Ann?  As I cannot find his birth or death I can't move on. On the 1841 census Ann is described as widow living with her youngest child age 12 so he must have died between 1828 and 1841.

Thanks

Margaret Smiley
