This ancestor has driven me mad for years. The first record I have of him is on an "Intention to Marry notice" in 1863 in New Zealand. His occupation was stated as Wheelwright and he married Eliza HOLDSWORTH in Otahuhu New Zealand. His length of residence at that time was reported as 12 months. On other documentation it said he was from Lincolnshire England. They had 4 children Elizabeth, George, Joseph & Mary between 1864 and 1869. When his father in law David HOLDSWORTH died in 1868 in his will he said he would leave an inheritance to his daughter Eliza FRY provided she was legally separated from her husband William FRY. William FRY never reported the births of his children it was either done by his wife or fatherinlaw. His son Joseph died in 1869 and this was never registered either. Around this time 1870 I can find no more records of William FRY. His Wife Eliza took up with a Joseph COLLICOAT. She gave birth to a child called Eva FRY in 1873 on the birth certificate it said father William FRY the child died within 2 months and on the death certificate it said her name was Eva HOLDSWORTH & "father unknown" Eliza had two illegitmate children to COLLICOAT & then married him in 1882 saying she was a widow. I purchased EVERY death certificate of a William FRY in NZ between 1870 and 1882 and none of them were MY William FRY. Some years later I found an Obituary for Eliza COLLICOAT in which it stated her first husband William FRY died on a voyage back to England in 1870. If he died on a voyage in 1870 she told lies that he was father of Eva in 1873 who then was reportedly fatherless two months later. If she was a widow why didnt she marry COLLICOAT earlier than 1882. I cant find him on any deaths at sea Ive looked at.. Im tending to think he came to a sticky end somewhere, I dont know if she ever got her fathers inheritance. If anyone has a William FRY ancestor born around 1835 in Lincolnshire that they have been looking for please let me know because I would love to know where the heck he came and went!!

Hi Fern Welcome to Rootschat I've checked the 1841 for Lincolnshire, but no William Fry of any age Looks like his family might have emigrated already or moved out of county. For the counties I have access to there is no William Fry of suitable age born out of county. The only likely candidate is in Cambridgeshire but he is listed as born in county - does have a father George and sister Mary though which fits with children's names Can post his details if you like. Otherwise nothing Jan

My 1841 index has no FRYs at all in Lincs.
Only 3 entries in 1851 - all immigrants, no William.
There are a fair few FRYERs though.

Im wondering if can possibly find this William in 1851 & 1861 census so I can see what occupation he went into or at least discount him from being my William Fern

Hi I think you can discount the Cambridgeshire William - eventually found the family in 51 still in March , surname is Hey. William is an Ag Lab. Rechecked the 41 image surname is hard to read but could be Hey not Fry.
There is an interesting family in Lincs in 51 whose youngest child was born in New South Wales. I understand emigrants to New Zealand often went via Australia so I suppose it is possible they had a son William who stayed in NSW when they returned to England The father John is a Mason but the eldest son is a carpenter. Unfortunately the children other than the youngest are born St Pancras, London and that is where they would have been in 41, which I can't check for you.

Jan, You got me interested about that family in Lincs with a youngest child born NSW? Obviously that meant they went to Australia & came back to Lincs? Could you post the information please I might be able to track them whilst in NSW and see.. William did 'mix' with quite a few families that came from Lincs when he was in NZ. Thanks Fern
