Sarah Page born Chilham Kent 1836 who are parents?
|
Hi,
I'm at a loss as to how to find my grandchildren's ancestry on their mother's side. She was born in Scotland and she's given me a 'tree' of sorts... all based on family memories, no documentation from them at all.
I've looked at some sites with Scottish records but I'm no further ahead. Can SKS help me if I give a few details?
I'll just start with one family -
Dennis McColl born about 1884 in Renton s/o Peter (no info on mother)
Dennis McColl md Margaret Brown d/o John (no info on mother) and had a daughter:
Sarah Stirling Brown McColl b: 03 Jul 1917 in Renton md Henry Coleman b: 18 Aug 1915 in Clydebank d: 27 Dec 1975 in Bonhill, Dunbartonshires/o Henry Coleman & Marion Wylie
Sarah's siblings as per family recollections (no dates known for births etc): Dennis McColl Margaret (Peggy) McColl Kate McColl Helen (Ellie) McColl Mary McColl Janet (Jenny) McColl
Is this enough info for finding them in the 1901 census, and does anyone have access to that? Or is there something else I should be looking in?
I figure Henry Coleman and Marion Wylie might be in the 1901 census -- they were both born Renton but I don't know when. One son (Henry) was born 1915 but I don't know if he's the oldest, youngest, in the middle ----
If anyone can guide me in the right direction or find anything on these lines, you're a miracle worker and I'm forever grateful. Thanks!

eillo,
There are some good tips about researching in Scotland in the posts at the top of the first page of the Scotland General section. Especially a couple by Boongie Pam e.g. 'Where to Start with Scottish Research'.

Hello again eillo,
A search on ScotlandsPeople (free - though you do need to be registered) found only two births of a Den*is McColl in Scotland in the time period, 1880-1888. Narrowing the search found that both were Dennis and both were born in 1884. And narrowing the search further found that one of these was born in Renton. Let's hope this is your Dennis - and then, from his birth certificate, you'll be able to find out the name and occupation of his father, and the name and maiden surname of his mother.
Good luck,
JAP

Hi Eillo
Just some more info to help you out at the beginning of your search:
I'll do it in sections otherwise it gets confusing:
Henry Col(e)man and Marion Wylie, parents of Henry born c.1915:
They married in 1898 in Bridgeton, Glasgow City. Henry Snr was born on 16 Sept 1874 in High Church, Glasgow City to John Colman and Caroline Inglis who in turn were married in 1873 also in High Church. From IGI, one other son showing, John born on 11 Mar 1873. Marion/Marriann Wylie born c.1880/1 to Robert Wylie and Ellen/Helen Aitken. They were married end of 1861 in High Church Paisley. Lots of children showing for them on IGI, I think Marion may have been their last child.
Denis McColl and Margaret Brown, parents of Isabella born. c.1917:
They married in 1905 in Renton, Dumbarton. Denis's parents appear to be Peter McColl and Helen Davidson. Denis born in 1884 in Renton. Margaret Brown's parents were John Brown and Catherine Stewart(spl?). who married in 1885 in Renton.
I'll PM you with more details.
Hope this is a start!
Regards.
Monica

Wow, thanks so much to everyone for their help with these Scottish ancestors! I am trying to put it all together and figure out my next step. I told my d-i-l about what everyone found, and she's thrilled, even phoned her mother to tell her the news. I appreciate everyone's kindness in doing lookups and sending images.

I am also researching the same McGilley family and wonder if we are already in contact with each other.

name Gallacher (they married 1845 in Gorbals). Helen was the daughter of Thomas Davies and Mary Davies maiden name Churchill.
Hi. I've done more research on the family since my last post here and have found siblings of Helen Davies. They were all born in Ireland. Paul, her brother, is in the 1891 census with his sisters Mary and Margaret, his grandfather Thomas Tool (b. Ireland ca 1821) and 2 cousins - Bridget Skanne and Mary Stanton. I'm having a heck of a time finding the family before this, and I can't figure out how Thomas Tool is a grandpa unless he's a step-grandfather.
Mary Churchill married a second time to Thomas Mulcairn. I have her death cert. from 1920 which gives her 2 husbands' names and her son Paul is the informant.
Do you have more info you can share on this family? I'm trying to get a booklet done for my grandkids for Christmas (it's their lines through their mother, my daughter in law)

Solved the mystery of the tool link ....
Paul Daves died on 9th May 1937 in Renton his death certificate lists two wives Annie Tool and Mary Lacey
Thank you! One mystery solved :-) Perhaps the cousins are Annie's also so I'll keep that in mind as I search.
Did Paul's death cert. provide info on his parents? I'd like to compare with what Helen's death cert had. I ran out of credits on ScotlandsPeople so couldn't go any further. The notices that I paid go to hubby's email account and he does get a tad grumpy when he sees a new purchase there every couple of weeks :-)
I think you are right that the family came over between census years.
