what a pedigree!!

As I replied in the other thread about royalty -- That, and a dollar-twenty-five, will get me a cup of coffee!   Wink

Seriously, though, I had no idea we had any English ancestors, much less royal ones.  It has forced me to start reading about some of your British history!  Quite a few of these monarchs were cads and scoundrels -- not so sure I'm proud to be descended from them!   Roll Eyes

I've just dug out the following at the weekend:

Quote:
This Assheton family dates back to the Norman Conquest, and had fought with the Conqueror at Hastings in 1066. They had formed an alliance by marriage with the Hothams. Asshetons and Hothams were to become members in Cromwell's Long Parliament and fought at the Battle of Agincourt. Ralph Assheton knighted by Richard III in 1483 and known as The Black Knight. Later Sir John Assheton was knighted on the battlefield at Northampton by the king.

Bosworth Field 1485
The Hopwoods were subject to Sir Ralph Assheton, Vice constable of England the new Lord of Middleton at this time. Sir Ralph executed Richard Crookback's enemies with great severity. He had a reputation for cruelty and was known as the 'Black Knight'. Thomas Hopwood and his three young sons John, Robert and Ralph fought under the Black Knight's banner at Bosworth though the battle was lost owing to treachery. After the death of their royal master Richard, they fled the field, but the forces of Henry Tudor captured them and Sir Ralph was later beheaded.
Unquote

Ralph Assheton was my 15x grandfather. Not sure whether I should be pleased I've managed to go back that far, or dismayed that I've found such a character.

p.p.s

This reminds me of the man who boasted of tracing his ancestors back to Alexander the Great !

"Unfortunately," came the answer, "all of our family records were lost in the Flood !"

King Cerdic of Wessex in 500's; Egbert, First King of all England; a princess whose name I can't remember; one of the men who killed Becket. And a witch burned in Salem, Mass. in 1600's.  In Waterman line I have many first settlers of several towns in Ct. and Vt., U.S.A..

I found a transcript on the internet of a letter written by Jane Austen to her sister Cassandra, mentioning the names of two of her aunts and a cousin - who are also my  v-e-r-y  d-i-s-t-a-n-t  cousins. Apparently one of the aunts had hardly any teeth Grin

I haven't discovered this - known it for a long time - but he is in my tree so worthy of a mention.   Gordon McRae, star of the film "Oklahoma" is my first cousin once removed.

Not a direct descendant, but related by marriage to Sir Walter Scott, but better than him I am a direct descendant of the Collyns family originally of Devon.
This is better known as the family that Jane Austen wrote about in Pride and Prejudice! She changed quite a lot of details about them, including spelling(!), but the fact that most of them were doctors and priests rings true, as well as estates they owned and timeframes.
Hope you like this Darcy (and Minn)!!!  Grin
Also related by marriage to the Gilbey family of Essex from Gilbey's Gin! Seems the entirity of my mother's line were brewers, victuallers....maybe that explains why Mum and I have a YEAST intolerance!!!  Shocked

And on the subject of family legends that are downright difficult if not impossible to verify, my paternal grandmother's family is reputedly descended from St Cuthbert, he of the Lindisfarne Gospels. The link could not be direct, because chastity was the rule for monks of the time, but Cuthbert as a middle name for girls proliferates up to the 1890s when my grandmother was born.

My father seemed to think that one of his female cousins married the brother of Sir Len Hutton, the cricketer which displays a different aspect of a tenuous connection to fame.

My great grandfather was famous for other reasons though. Apparently, someone who knew him told a elderly relative that he could really sup his ale. He drank it by the barrel, not by the pint.

One of these days I may uncover somebody who can be proven as being famous for doing something worthwhile (not that I am displaying any disrespect for the consumption of beer).
