 Cool
Hi all,

My interests in Cornwall are the Eddy family from St Just.
My connection came to Australia as did most families in these areas. They came to South Australia first to the tin mines and then my family came to Western Austalia for the gold mining.

Would love to hear from anyone that has connections to this family.

Hi Smurf,

I  have a gold mining Richard Eddy b1871 St Just...who has become my brickwall!

He last appearance on the census was 1881 at nine years of age, I then have his death certificate for 1902 at Trewellard, St Just. .....his brother James was the informant.
He married in St Just 1898 to Janie (Elizabeth Jane Thomas) and had two children Richard b1899 and Doris 1903, six months after his death........all certificates confirm he was a Gold Miner

I believe he was in Johannesburg at one time gold mining but possibly mined in other Countries  at first. .....also there is a possibilty that he either went out with or to other family members already abroad mining.

Which Eddy familiy are you possibly  connected to, as every little helps?
Everything at the moment points to Richards parents as being Richard Eddy and Sarah Trembath from Pendeen,St Just.

Regards Ambers.

Hi Deb.

Thank you for looking for me but I was able to rule this family out.

I found mine 1901 RG 13/2257 F66 P11..... mother Janie and Richard son, living at her mothers house.

All certificates prove that this is the right family but where in the world is Richard Eddy senior....off Gold mining I suspect.
This is the  Richard I need to prove  to confirm a generation back, which a far as I can see is one of two families.

Regards Ambers

Hi Amber

Sorry about that .

Have you tried posting on the South African Boards? ...maybe they could do a look-up for you.

Hi Deb,

Many thanks for suggestions

As he wasn't born, married or died in Johannesburg,  I can't think of any extra information for anyone to help me.

I do wonder if he returned home from Johannesburg because of the Anglo Boer War about 1899-1902, he died in Cornwall September 1902. From what I have read the miners came home quite often whilst working there, he was home in 1898 to get married but missing again 1901.and home again in 1902.

Have tried Passenger Ship lists but there is not enough information....and oh so many Richard Eddy's.

Hello Deb,

I have read--- Cornish Miners to South Africa----really interesting.

The Funeral Card does mention a William Eddy..... but no age or address. The family I am trying to connect does have one, and he would have been about 18 at that time.
Thanks for the link as I haven't come across it before.

Best wishes Ambers

Hi Althea,

I am in contact with Adrian Eddy...it's a great site.

I notice on your profile that you have the name MATtHEWS in your family.

On Richard Eddy and Eliza Jane Thomas marriage certificate 1898, the witnesses names are John and Margaret Matthews. Are these two people in your family as I can't see the connection so far with mine?Huh?

Hi Smurf.

I have just received the Will of Richard Eddy b1871...died 1902....who was a Gold Miner.

He was the son of Sarah Trembath and Richard Eddy, it appears from the Will he never married as a wife was not metioned...the Will was written a month before his death.

At least now I know he is not my ggrandfather....back to the drawing board. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
