Hi gaygirl,
I've found a Martha ELLWOOD married Ernest Stanley GIBSON in 1904, folio 5837. This is interesting given your mention of the three girls staying with the GIBSON family in Petone. I wonder if the Gibson family sponsored the girl's journey to New Zealand? There is a Martha Gibson in the 1919 Electoral Roll for Wellington Suburbs.
A Nellie ELLWOOD married Phillip Worledge YOUNG in 1928, folio 08358.
Can't find a marriage for Frances after 1899.
Anther suggestion would be the NZ Society of Genealogists http://www.genealogy.org.nz/ to see if they have information such as pedigree records, etc for either the Gibson, Ellwood, or Young families.
Regards, riley

Hi Gaygirl, I don't believe these to be your relatives, but be aware of them so that you don't go down the wrong road. My ggrandfather was Thomas Gibson b. Nelson 1863. His father was Henry Gibson. Henry Gibson married Harriett Sutton in 1862. They had a child Martha Gibson born at Awatere on 12/2/1866. Martha married Charles Sergent Ball on 9/7/1887. Charles was son of Richard and Mary Ball. Martha died in 1941 and Charles 1942. Both at Masterton. Best Regards Jim

At this time it was fairly standard for children who were being cared for under poor law to be sent to the colonies. They were usually between the ages of ten and fifteen.
The main destination was Canada and they can be traced on the Home children site, but other colonies including New Zealand were used.
The migration was organised by religious bodies and others like Dr Barnardos. They weren't always orphans, just children who their parents could no longer support. I have had a quick look on the web but have found nothing more than a reference to a ship load of 327 children from Mauritius. However a longer look might reveal something
