Thomas JACKSON, soldier, 1700s
« on: Saturday 12 November 05 13:58 GMT (UK) »

hi, i'm researching a Thomas JACKSON of the 15th regiment of Foot.
he may or may not be Aberdeen born although he married there, 2 of his kids   were born there and he [re]settled there after his Regiment were disbanded in 1802.  I’m hoping someone out there may be able to help me get over the stumbling block of his origins and service career

here's a resume of his life .. or what we know of it, and some questions at the foot

Thomas JACKSON, a serving solder in the 15th of Foot at the time, married Bellie-born [Banff/Moray] Elspet Ingram St James Chapel, St Nich.  ABD 10 September 1798
they had 3 children .. that we've found so far
Catherine b.c.1801 Ireland while he was serving there
Margaret bapt. 1803 Old Machar Aberdeen
Elizabeth bapt. 1807 Old Machar Aberdeen

in the 1841 Burgh of Abd
wife Elspet shows up as 80yo
living with dau Margaret 35yo
their address: Seaton Logie Chanonry, Old Machar ABD

in 1851:
Elspet is 88yo   occ. keeper of Porter's Lodge
Margaret 47yo her assistant    same address as 1841

i have the marriage lines and baptismal lines for ALL the above mentioned

Thomas, now a labourer, was still around to witness the chr. of his 1st 3 grandchildren born to Catherine JACKSON and George ROBERTSON, so presumably Thomas Jackson died some time between 1833 and 1841.

deaths found:
Elspet JACKSON of Porter's Lodge, Seaton; 91yrs, pauper; PRO O/M; buried.14 Nov 1853
‘a’ Thomas JACKSON is on record as being buried Old Abd; 83yo labourer; PR O/M; buried 22 Jan 1835

if this is our Thomas JACKSON, he works out at being born c.1742 therefore a fair bit older than his wife Elspet JACKSON who was bapt in 1764.  the burial date certainly fits all other known facts.

there was another, earlier, Thomas JACKSON, soldier, who married a Janet SNOWIE in ABD, but, if our Thomas proves to be the above 1742-born one, then this couple were married way too late to be our Thomas's parents

questions:
## has anyone else come on this family?
## Does anyone have any way of checking if the Elspet JACKSON bur. 1864 shares the same grave as the Thomas JACKSON bur. 1835?
## did the 15th Regiment of Foot recruit in ABD.
## if they did,  where in Aberdeen would one likely find records of folk taking the King's shilling and joining up in the late 1700s?

i do appreciate that the 15th Foot were a YKS regiment and the name Jackson  was more commonly found in YKS than practically anywhere else in Britain.   On the other hand YKS regiments were busy in Scotland trying to keep us under control  Wink  + there were fears of Napoleon's army making for our shores so English Regiments might well have been based in perceived sensitive areas!  I mean, even if he was YKS-born, he must, as a soldier, have had a reason for being in ABD in the 1790s, and although not common, the name Jackson has been around ABD for a few hundred years.

thanks a lot for your time Smiley

1835 - 83 =c1752, narrows the age gap a little. Don't think that helps you though.

Good luck,

brilliant, thank you, Grothenwell.  what a silly mistake ... but it does just possibly bring our Thomas Jackson & Janet Snowie into the picture.  they were married in 1753
