Found this new link today - very interesting and worth a look. (Apologies if it's already been posted)
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/index.html
you can select by area, and county, and can view census details of inmates, 1881, gives great detail of life in the workhouse and photos too. Newbie

Another well-known workhouse site is the Rossbret Institution Site:
http://www.institutions.org.uk/
and specifically:
http://www.institutions.org.uk/workhouses/
A lot of Workhouse census-info is to be found on:
http://www.census-online.com/links/
but this might just be repeating the data on the above two sites, Rossbret and Peter Higginbotham's (newbie's link).
And I know I am repeating myself, but not every rootschatter reads every topic, so here it is again:
A lot of institutions seem to have listed inmates by initials (A.Smith, B.Jones, etc), so if you're trying to find Alfred Smith, remember to enter "Alfred" and "A." in the search boxes in freeCEN, 1881 census, 1901 census, etc

Thank you for the links, I particularly liked Peter Higginbottoms site because of the background info and photos on the institutions, I found out from a look-up (1861) I did recently for Mistyrose that the Workhouse in Calne had listed all the inmates only by initials, - there was no surname you'd have thought they'd have known that one day we'd be looking for them Newbie
