Stafford WW1 death James H Pearson
« on: Saturday 04 April 09 09:14 UTC (UK) »

was born in Stafford 1945 and my Fathers and Mothers families were Stafford people working in Bagnals and later English Electrics and Lotus shoes. My Father died last year and my wife and I have come up against a wall whilst trying to find out more about Fathers "Uncle Jim"!
Uncle Jim was James Henry Pearson and his brother was Charles Pearson, my Grandfather; their parents were John Pearson and Annie nee Pitchford who lived in 36 North Castle Street Stafford at the time of WW1. The family were quite large with the eldest being a William Pearson who was unknown to my father as there must have been a split in the family and William moved out, it seems my Grandfather never spoke of him. However Grandfather's younger brother James died in WW1 but his body was never found and we cannot find any record of his army background. Family chatter speaks of him being mentioned "In Dispatches" as he recovered his machine gun under difficult circumstances. Can anyone assist please. James was born 14th December 1887 in Peel Street Castle Church Stafford and in the 1911 census was living with Fanny Gee (my Gt Grandmother) at 19 Lammascotte rd Stafford. Is James mentioned on the WW1 memorials in Stafford?
Annie Pearson (my other Gt Grandmother) died and John Pearson re married a Mattie which may have been the cause of family rupture(?) and they had a son Alfred Pearson who also died in WW1, we have his grave location. Other deaths in the family included Edwin B Gee who is mentioned on the Lotus (shoes) War memorial.
Help on this would be very welcome and we would be pleased to share that which we know of the family with any interested persons. We have information going back quite sometime.

Hi,

If you can list the names and then what information you have or know (if any) I'm sure I can help you with some extra information.

I know some details are included in your post but it'll be better for me with just the names and information etc.

I may have found some information on Edwin Gee but want to check you details first.

Regards

Dear Adrian.
Thank you for your interest I will set out that which i know firstly about James Henry Pearson.
James was born 14 December 1887 Peal St Stafford.
Remained un Married and is in 1911 Census living with my Great Granmother Fanny Gee in 19 Lammascott Road Stafford.
We have him in all previous Census records but after 1911 nothing.
Family story goes that he was killed and body never recovered, he was said to have been mentioned in dispatches in recovering his Machine Gun, perhaps he was in a Machine Gun Regiment, we do not know.
His death is not recorded in CWGC or on Stafford WW1 memorial. We have spent much time and afford trying to trace him and our last hope is that in 2014 perhaps he will be mentioned in the Red Cross records when they are published. Also checked to see if he was "shot at dawn". We are coming to the conclusion he did not go to war and perhaps the family covered this up, sad if true. We have looked into each and every J H Pearson who died in WW1 and cannot identify him in the new Ancestry lists, very frustrating!
We have traced his half brother Alfred Pearson (son of John and Martha Pearson John's second marriage} and visited his grave in "Epehy Wood".
Edwin Gee who actually  had a middle name Brooks but since birth we cannot see it was ever used was buried in "Cement House Cemetery" near Eypers and we also visited his grave.
Others of my family who died were _Stephen Kenward (no grave); George Henry Birtles; all very sad.
Any help with these or any others such as William George Pearson born 4th July 1881, who was my Grandfathers Brother who was never mentioned and my Father knew nothing about him, he married  in Stoke Upon Trent 23rd Nov 1907 to a May Elizabeth Collier
Regards and thanks.
Stuart P. Pearson.

Hi Stuart

The fact that you cannot find him on the CWGC could be that he has been missed off by error.  My Great Uncle Thomas Noden was not on the site and not on the war memorial I expected to find him on.  Between 1911 and 1914 he went to work in a different area and was recorded on that war memorial and it was only by chance that I found this out.

Have you searched the forces deaths on findmypast.  I found my Gt Uncle's death certificate on there and with other evidence have now managed to have him put on the CWGC site and his name is to be included on the Poziers memorial in France.

Good Luck
