I've got one for the experts now - all and any advice most welcome.
My parents neighbour takes a keen interest in my genealogical progress and is quite envious, as she was adopted in 1945 when she was 2 and so "has no real family of her own" (quote from her)
Anyway she was recently diagnosed as being the carrier of a genetic defect. She has no children of her own, but knows she has a sister. She has made enquiries as to the names of her biological parents, and now has their names and where they lived. She cannot obtain the name of her sister, as her sister must first consent.
She has asked me if I can find out any more about her family, especially with regard to the death certs to determine a) from which line this illness originates, and b) to be able to contact/warn her sister.
As she was born in 1943, this would give a possible DOB for her parents of around 1915/20, so her grandparents would be around for the 1901 census. However, it would only be possible to search for her paternal grandfather using this method.
She has given me copies of all the correspondence she has, but I don't really want to divulge names and places, as some of them may still be alive.
Any suggestions?

I would not say that I'm an expert ! 
As your friend has the names of her biological parents, she could go to the public record office and look for there births/marriage/deaths in the indexs. She could then order the relevant certificates and they would give her the information.
She could also look for her sisters birth, so she could obtain her name.
Just because she is adopted this will not stop her doing her family tree. Once she has her biological parents birth certificates, these will give her the names of her biological grandparents, she can then look for there birth/marriage certificates etc.
Believe me, I know this is possible, as I am adopted myself and have traced my biological family back to the 1850's.
Just a word of caution, her sister may not know she exists, so its recommended that an intermediatry is used for the initial contact. Look up NORCAP.....they will help her if she wishes to contact her sister.

I wasn't sure whether there was any restrictions on ordering certificates for people who may still be living without concrete proof of their consent.
Thanks for the tip with Norcap as well. I'll pass that on.

Hmmm A subject I dont like to get involved in for many reasons. But herein lies a few problems of law. Your friend having been adopted pre 1973 is required by law to undertake some counselling before she or anyone on her behalf can actively seek birth parents/siblings. I am amazed that she cannot be given the name of her sibling because under law again she is entitled to that although not where she is living. Also the agency that told her the details is if requested allowed to make contact on her behalf and then pass back to that person if the sibling wishes to be introduced again Counselling would be required by law and also I would suggest as being rejected could cause some negative feelings.
Genetic diseases are a common thing and no death cert of her birth parents or blood line will show this up so she wont be able to trace what line if in fact there is any trace prior to this friend. Genetic ilnesses can suddenly appear as I know from my own daughter to well.
All in all I would leave well alone for your friends benefit.

Hi Rob,
a negative response can be just as good as a positive, if taken objectively.
I've just looked again through the papers I've been given. She has her original birth certificate, so her parents names are on it, as well as the address. Her parents were not married at the time.
She has had appointments with the County Social Services Department, going back as far as 1992. I have a copy of the letter she sent to the Adoption contact Register in 1996 asking for the name of her sister (born 2 years previously, not subsequently, as I thought). The response from the OPCS for the contact register only confirms her entitlement to her own birth certificate.
I'll pass on your info and leave the contact to her sister up to her. She's adult enough to make her own decisions.
The other query I had was how to trace her parents births, assuming they were born around 1915/1920.
Knowing the address where my neighbour was born, I suppose the local registry office would be the next best bet, as the BMD sites don't as yet have a full coverage of the more recent events.

1837online.com I believe does have these dates online however the seach facility is only three letters and if it is a common name ....... The researching of this information is no different in reality to the search of our ancestors. I take it you have the names of the birth grand parents and having a birth date of this person I would probably start looking for a marriage to try and asscertain their ages so you have a much more concentrated year for birth's assuming an age could lead you down many wrong roads.

Rob,
not thought about 1837 to tell the truth. However, she did have a common-ish name. I only have her birth cert, so only her parents names, and I as said, they weren't married.
I suppose it may be worth looking to see if they married later though.... If so, then this might give the grandparents names.

Your right its the wrong side of the penines for me hahahaha. Seriously though I know you dont want to post to many details but I guess if you posted the grand parents names they would be dead or is it the parents who if born in 1915 are more than likely to have passed on as well. Someone on here may just be heading into the RO for Manchester and be able to grab you some lookups

Just to let you know, I did'nt have any problems ordering certificates for people who are still living.
I was just asked why I was ordering them and think I had to show some ID.
