Hi Aaron,
Not sure if your enquiry has been answered, but a David BLACK is listed in Vol 2 of The Dictionary of NZ Biography. I'll have a look tomorrow.
The NZSG has a certificate for a David BLACK baptised 25 Sept 1846 at Linlithgow SCT and a Pedigree Entry for a David BLACK born 25 Sept 1846 at Whitburn SCT. These may both relate to the same individual given the identical dates.
A David BLACK, a miner aged 28 from IRL, arrived Otago NZ 1861 via Melbourne AUS on the ship GENII.
A David BLACK, no occupation, aged 34 from ENG, arrived Otago NZ 1861 via Melbourne AUS on the ship LIGHTNING.
There is also a Stray certificate mentioning a David BLACK dated 26 Aug 1869. Event: Marriage of parent on Birth certificate. Place: Cambusnethan LKS SCT.
Based on the information you provided, I strongly suspect that descendants of your David Black have submitted their research with the NZSG.
