John Barron and Mary Shaw - Cumbernauld
« on: Friday 18 November 05 22:55 GMT (UK) »

I am looking for any information on John Barron and Mary Shaw who would have married some time around 1794/5.  Between 1795 and 1817 they had 11 children, all born in Cumbernauld.

John Barron is 5 generations back on my wife's side.  Any information that would help me break down this brick wall would be greatly appreciated.

A bit of negative help for you maybe ... the Cumbernauld MI's do not show any Barrons but there are 9 Shaws listed.

Do you have any Shaw names other than Mary?

regards,

Lindsay

Thanks Lindsay,

I have a Jean Barron (John and Mary's daughter) who "was buried in Cumbernauld Churchyard which was certified by Robert Warden (Undertaker)" This was in 1855.

I also have three later generations buried there.  I have been to the Churchyard and have only found a stone for the more recent burials in 1904-22 and 1953-76 (my wife's grandparents)  I know of one other plot with no stone with burials 1916-20.

It has been suggested to me that John and Mary may have been too early for the churchyard in Cumbernauld and may have been buried in Kilsyth or Kirkintilloch.

Unfortunately I do not have any others of Mary Shaw's family, although I do recollect having seen a few stones with the Shaw name.

The Barron Family lived for several generations in the Wynd in Cumbernauld. Their house was eventually sold in the mid 80s and is currently a children's Nursery.

Thanks again

William

Hi William,

No Barrons buried in Kilsyth Churchyard according to the pre-1855 MI's for West Stirlingshire.

Plenty of Shaws though!

According to the 1841 Census John was still alive, aged 68 and born in Ireland.

He was living with several members of his family at North Marl Roaddile.

This would have made John's birth around 1773.

There is no mention of his wife Mary.

If John was Irish then he is likely to have been Roman Catholic hence why I can't find him the the Church of Scotland Graveyard at Cumbernauld.

Does anyone have any suggestions where a Catholic would have been buried in the 1840s

Hi, just come across your post and wondered if you ever found  where John was buried.

I live in Cumbernauld and know of another graveyard that you maybe haven't tried, not sure when it was first used though but worth a try. It is call EASTFIELD CEMETERY and is only about 1-2 miles from Cumbernauld Village

The only details that I have for John and Mary is that John appears in the 1841 Census with no wife.  He does not appear in the 1851 census so safe to assume that Mary died before 1841 and John died between 1841 and 1851. All of their children were born in Cumbernauld between 1795 and 1817.

Their daughter Jean died in 1855 and is buried in Cumbernaul Churchyard as certified by the undertaker.  I have visited the churchyard na dhave been unable to find this grave.

Their son James died 1857 in Baronhill.

The 1841 census shows the family living at Roadside which came after North Main Street on page 25 of the census.

Whereabouts is the Eastfield Cemetery?

Hi William,

As far as I know, Eastfield Cemetery is quite a new one. The address is: Craighalbert Road, Cumbernauld aka Balloch Loop Road.

If you can find the Tesco at Craigmarloch, you're nearly there

The following is a link to North Lanarkshire Cemeteries pager but as there's no map, a visit to Multimap would probably be your best bet.
