Looking for those pesky elusive ancestors !!!

Harriet Pooks parents are John Pook and Sarah Cobbett. They were married 2 November, 1817 at Stoke Next Guildford, Surrey
Information of any kind is most welcome.

Hi
Just doing some housekeeping on the Surrey boards and going through the oldest posts. Now there are further resources available it gives a chance for old posts to be looked at again to see if the information can be found or the chance for posters to say whether this information has been answered and this topic can be completed. If it can be completed please put completed into the title of this topic and it can be moved to Surrey completed (it is never lost off Rootschat) giving more space for other topics to be looked at again by all of us to see if we can help. If you are still looking for the information perhaps you can now add further details to help others search again for you.

Alas, I have no futher information at this stage and so remain stuck in the same piece of mud

Why do you think a couple born in Somerset - they give Lopen as their birthplaces on the 1851 and 1861 censuses, married in Surrey?

Somerset has very poor coverage of its parishes on the IGI. Less then 10% have any coverage, which means more marriages aren't on the IGI than are. Have you checked to see whether there is a marriage in Somerset for John Pook and Sarah, or do you know her maiden name was indeed Corbett?
Since Harriet's baptism was a non-conformist one pre 1837, the registers are held by The National Archives. This website has the images from the registers.

Often with non-confomist baptisms the mother's maiden name is given. Is this the source you have accessed to know Sarah's name was Corbett?
If not the Dorset and Somerset Family History Society hold a marriage index which would be worth requesting a search of

Considering John and Sarah consistently give Lopen Somerset as their birthplace, regardless of whether they did indeed marry in Surrey or not, I think most further information about the family will be likely to be gleaned in Somerset, not Surrey.

The Surrey information comes to me via my 3rd cousin in Australia. I believe the POOK / COBBETT marriage in Surrey was the nearest that Ann could find at the time.
Therefore we have run with that for the time being.
We shall continue the search as you suggest in Somerset

I think going with the Surrey marriage just because it is the only one on the IGI (the coverage of Surrey parish registers is substantially better than Somerset) could be a dangerous blind alley for you. Lopen and Stoke next to Guildford are about a 100 miles apart.

We are in Manchester UK, although my wife is from Sydney. Mary Matthews emigrated with the family to NSW (as you may know) in 1853. She married an Andrew Clements in Blayney NSW where they had ten children. We visit Oz quite often and by coincidence were out over the other side of the Blue Mountins in August this year. We went through Bathurst on our way out tro Orange/Mudgee etc.
Let me know which branch of the family you come from. It would be interesting to know whether you descend fom the family that emigirated or whether there is another connection.
Of this family we only have one photograph which in of Mary Clements (nee Matthews) (see attached)
