Albion Hotel Hastings
« on: Sunday 20 November 05 15:00 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Can any one help me with the history of the Albion Hotel in Hastings.

I would like to find out what sort of an establishment it was as I have just found my Grt Grt Grandma was a barmaid there in 1851.

It's got me wondering what a gal of 21 from Bushey Heath in Hertfordshire would be doing working in Hastings. !!! Perhaps with a relative. Huh

I don't know who her parents are so I can't say if they were also in Sussex but I don't think so.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Hi Maddie

According to the 1851 Post Office Directory of Hastings

Emary James, junior, Albion Family Hotel & Posting House, wine and spirit merchant, omnibus, fly & Saddle Horse proprietor, Marine Parade facing the sea)

James Emary had quite a few business premises in Hastings and St Leonards.  Posting House was where mail was collected and delivered; Omnibus, Fly and saddle proprietor means he hired out pony and traps as well as saddled horses, omnibus I think refers to horse drawn buses and the pub/hotel is where it has always been and still is today - on the sea front facing the sea.

Cant say as to its reputation, but it seems as though it was a busy place

Thank you very much Chris. Sounds like it was a reputable hotel & very much like the Three Crowns Inn, Bushey Herts, where my Grt Grt Gran is living, with I presume a relative, in 1841.

It would also appear to be the ideal place where she could have met her future "husband", well, at least the father named on my Grt Grans birth cert. He was Charles Spurgeon a private cab driver, who could well have visited the hotel.

Can I ask, do you have any reference as to where James Emary was born. It says Middx on the census but not where.

Again, thank you for your help. It is much appreciated.

Regards
Maddie
