5, Marina, St Leonards
« on: Sunday 20 November 05 22:05 GMT (UK) »

My great-grandfather, Edward Godden, was a baker and confectioner with a shop at 5, Marina, St Leonards, in the mid to late 19th century (he died in 1890).  I've never been to the area, and the only pictures and information I can find suggest it was an upmarket street in a pretty upmarket place.  I'd be grateful for any local knowledge or sources of pictures which could shed some light.

Hi Sutton Trust

I have spent all weekend working on a research project connected with St Leonards and includes No 5 Marina otherwise known as No 5 Colonnade which was the home of a Baker and Confectioner for some 60 years.

Watch this space for more info

That's brilliant, Chris, pins down exactly when he was there.  I know one of his sons became baker in another part of the town.  Don't suppose there's any chance of a description or picture of the premises  Kiss

Hi Sutton Trust and Nashua

The trams date this photograph of the Marina in St Leonards - they appeared in Hastings in 1905, so this picture is about c1910.

At the road end of the pier in the picture(St Leonards Pier, not Hastings?) is No 55 Marina. - will try to get a better picture for you of No 55

The trams are approaching the South Colonnade (bottom left hand corner of the picture, but you cant see it) a row of 14 shops built by Decimus Burton to service the nobility of his new town of St Leonards on Sea.

Incidentally the tram lines are still there under the concrete/tarmac road, as is the old road made entirely of wooden blocks.  Every time road repairs or new drains are attempted, these wooden blocks surface as do the metal rails

I picked up some of these wooden blocks a few years ago from right outside the Royal Victoria Hotel, possibly from where Princes Victoria alighted from her carriage when she stayed in St Leonards for a month prior to becoming Queen Victoria.

The shops were built between 1828 and 1830 (have not found out the exact date as yet) so your Godden ancestors were one of the first to occupy them in the mid to late 1930's.

Unfortunately they were all pulled down in 1929 to make way for a new road along the sea front - I do have a picture of them taken in about 1923 which I will scan and post.

Hi again

Unfortunately try as I might, was unable to get that picture to scan properly - it just comes out as a load of dots - Sorry.

Had a look in later trade directories for your Edward Godden (1859, 1861 and 1866) but Edward is not listed.  I notice from the 1861 census he has moved to All Saint Place in the Old Town and is still listed as a Baker.

Edward Godden, 42, born Amesbury, Wiltshire, Head - Baker with Mary his wife 40, born Alfriston, Sussex, and children Alfred, Clara, Edward, Herbert, Mary, Walter.

Will see if I can spot his son Edward in later directories

Chris,  I can see the picture OK! (No dots.)

I'm a bit concerned about the sad-looking sailor talking into his mobile phone on the seaside bench just around the corner from the couple reading newspapers  Wink

Yes, I managed to get this picture to scan OK - it was the otherone c1923 showing the actual 'South Colonnade' that wont play ball with my scanner

Strange how I have spent the last few days doing some research and immeadiately someone asks a question that the research can answer - weird or what?

Many thanks for the picture and information, Chris.  Just to get it right, no. 5 is in the block on the right side of the picture???  Interesting that there was such a big turnover of occupants of the shop.  Did that apply to all the shops?  Was it because they were expensive to rent?
Please don't take the picture off the board just yet, I need to save it at home.

Sutton Trust

Sorry, but you have got t twisted.

No 5 Marina also known as 5 South Colonade is not actually on that picture.

The photographer would have been standing on No 14 (the last in the block of the 14 shops) facing the west, to take the picture that I attached to the message.

The view of the shops themselves does not scan very well, its all dots - but will have another go at it

Hi again

Think I might have cracked it this time

You are looking at No 1 South Colonnade or 1 Marina in this picture.

Count the Bay windows down on the sea facing side to find number 5

Whilst down town this morning, I spotted a new book on Hastings - after flipping through it, I came across a new picture of the South Colonnade taken from the front, but looked at the price; hmmmmm its got to go on my christmas list I am afraid

Many thanks again, Chris.  As for the book, can't you persuade your public library to buy it?  Though it's not the same as owning it, I know.
