William Sharp, captain of the Sensation
« on: Sunday 20 November 05 23:48 GMT (UK) »

My gg grandfather, William Sharp, was Master of the brigantine Sensation, a sailing collier working the east coast between Seaham, Sunderland and South Shields and Dover, for the company of J.W.Bussey.

I have found several references in the Dover Express and have the entry in Lloyds List relating to the loss of the Sensation off Redcar on the N.E. coast on 1 March 1899.

I would be interested in any information from local sources relating to the vessel, Captain Sharp, or the accident.

There was no loss of life in the accident and the steam collier that hit the Sensation took the crew home to Dover, where the 65-year-old skipper promptly returned to sea, retiring in 1907 at the age of 73!

Regards
Bill
