SMITH marriage in Beds?
« on: Wednesday 23 November 05 13:29 GMT (UK) »

Would it be possible for someone to see if they can find the details of a marriage between CHRISTOPHER SMITH and Elizabeth ( don't know her maiden name) approx possibly in Bedforshire. 1871 census shows his age as 42 and hers as 43. She is recorded as born in Biggleswade, he is recorded as born Digswell Herts. Their eldest child is on the 1871 census is shown as 15 yrs of age. Thanks  Smiley Lyn

Can't help with the marriage but interestingly, he's Walter instead of Christopher in 1861:
RG9/1118 28 27

'Down Hall Bridge in Tents' (they were in a travelling waggon in 1871):
Walter Smith, head, 31, Chairbottomer b. Digsell Herts
Elizabeth, wife, 32, b. Biggleswade
Caroline, dau, 5, b. do.
Walter, son, 3, b. Herts P___
James, son, 6ms, b. Wanstead Essex

Grin Hi Tanja. thank you so much for that info. I now have the 1861/71/81/81 for the family, and all info from people through this site  Cheesy I reckon he dropped the name Walter for christopher, as by 1871 he had a son called Walter. Thank you so much for sending that through  Smiley Lyn

Hello again Tanja  Smiley All the census returns show Christopher ( Walter ) born in Hertfordshire. I thought that as she was born in Beds, and the eldest child also born in Beds, maybe the marriage was in Beds. Roll Eyes Lyn

Marriage and birth coverage on FreeBMD is very bad for this time frame, and I couldn't find anything on the IGI either  Sad

Or try and find the marriage on FreeBMD using the 'view images' option.
Takes a little time, but it's free!

Marriages/baptisms in Biggleswade for this period are on the IGI as controlled extracts. If you're not conversant with the IGI it's at www.familysearch.org

There's a marriage on 16 July 1849 between Christopher Smith and Elizabeth Albone.

There was an Elizabeth Albone christened on 24 Aug 1828 which fits with the census age of Elizabeth Smith, but bear in mind there were more Albones than Smiths in the Biggleswade area!

According to the IGI they, or presumably they, had three children in Biggleswade, two of whom died young.
Elizabeth chr 21 Sept 1849
Cornelius chr 16 Jul 1852 bur 11 Nov 1852
Edward chr 21 Apr 1854 bur 4 Dec 1855

But I cannot find them in 1851, when they should have been in Biggleswade still.

Regards

Hello bedforshire boy. thank you for your reply. The Smith's I am following had other children, Caroline, ( I have found an entry for a Caroline Smith, b: Mar 1853 biggleswade) Walter, James, Jane, Bartholomew, Arthur and Emily. From the 1871 census details, the children are born in different areas, which makes sense as they were living in a traveling van, and the occupations are shown as hawkers. Thank's for your help  Smiley Lyn

Hi Lyn

I'm not convinced about that March 1853 entry. I've found it on FreeBMD but Biggleswade registration district included many of the surrounding parishes. As Caroline's age was consistent (5 in 1861, 15 in 1871) it seems a bit early to me.

Still can't find them in 1851. It looks as though they have been missed.

I'm not convinced about that March 1853 entry

Indeed, there are nearly no births on FreeBMD from 1854 through 1858.
