Hannah Maria Bryer
« on: Thursday 23 July 09 17:31 UTC (UK) »

Hi All,
I'm having difficulty in find a birth for Hannah Maria Bryer, born circa 1812, my 3rd great grandmother.
On census returns it gives her place of birth as Broadwater and Worthing.  Her marriage to Thomas John Grinyer was 20th June 1830 at Saint Nicholas, Brighton. Thomas was editor of the "Brighton Examiner"newspaper and they also ran the Swan Downers School at 7 Temple Street, Brighton
I would appreciate any info that any one has, or could find for me, regards Hannah's birth or parents.
Thankyou in advance
Ian

There are 7 people on the Genes R Website, five of which have Hannah Bryer born 1812 in Broadwater and two have her born Brighton.   Suggest you try to make contact with one of these.

Hi Roy,
Appreciate your getting in touch.
I am a subscriber to Genes Re, the people that have Hannah Maria on there probably got the info from me. I have asked if they have knowledge of her but to no avail.  I have an extensive genealogy on the Grinyers and have given info to quite a few people.
I have been "brick walled" with Hannah for some time, as I  have not had the access to the West Sussex RO, as living in Lancashire.
I am now relying on some information via RootsChat
Cheers, Ian

Ian,

Here's her baptism at St Mary's Church, Broadwater.

1812 Aug 23  Anna Maria d. of John & Hannah BRYER

Source: http://www.barriesgenealogy.co.uk/html/st_mary_s_baptisms_1558-1900.html

No siblings found there and no sign of her parents' marriage in the SMI 20 years either side of 1800.

Thankyou both for your input.
I have an inkling that the parents, John and Hannah were from outside of the county, possibley Dorset, as no record on SMI or IGI. I will continue to trawl.
Roy, regards the Clifton link to the Grinyers. Thomas (my 2nd great granduncle) and Emma had seven children all told. If you would like files re the Grinyers please contact offline.
Again, thanks to you both,
Ian

No objection to chatting offline, but the origin of the Grinyers is one of those family lines I have chosen to leave.  I have enough on my plate with the Cliftons and finding out more about Emma's sister Lucy (husband John O'Neil) and her brothers, William (wife Sophia Sayers) & Francis (still unmarried at 50).  Each appear in some censuses but not in others.  If these Cliftons ever appeared as witnesses in any Grinyer documents, I would be most interested to hear more (offline).
