Can you please give us the time frame / period for your ancestor becoming Mayor of Lewes.
It will better help identify what resources are available

Alison, As you most probably know, George Holman was mayor of Lewes, 1898-1901 and 1907-1911. If you search www.a2a.org.uk, it shows that there is quite a bit of information (including photos and newspaper clippings collected by George Holman) that have been deposited at ESRO. I'm assuming that you have all of the family history information related to George Holman (if not, I can point you in the right direction). One other interesting fact that I came across regarding George was that hewas appointed Manager and Secretary of the Sussex Express newspaper in 1888 at a salary of £200 per annum.
Regards
Mark

I did some research into the the Sussex Holmans, and in the course of it acquired a coloured illustration of the large painting of George Holman that hangs in Lewes council chambers. If it is of interest to you, send me a PM with your e-mail address and I will scan and send you a copy Roy G Incidentally, my Holmans turned out to be Kentish ones, so he was never a relative.

Chung Managed to snatch your e-mail address before it was quite rightly deleated. (you should have sent a PM = Personal Message) Have sent a photo of George and supporting text, but as I write from abroad, my responses are occasionally thought to be spam and end up in the virus vault. If you have received nothing, check your vault out. Roy G
