McGurn born c1814 Leitrim

Am researching Christopher McGURN b c1814 Leitrim married to Mary GORMLY b c 1820 Roscommon. They moved to Liverpool around the early 1840's.

I have hit the proverbial brickwall. Unfortunately I don't know what townships in Ireland or indeed anything to do with McGurn's in Leitrim. All I have found is that McGURN is one of the names to be found in Fermanagh.

I have a hunch that the family moved to England because it was a mixed marriage. Common male names are Christopher, Charles and Philip. These has been instrumental is locating sibling descendants. The names Christopher and Philip appear to be uncommon in Irish names.

I did finally find g.grandfather  Philip's birth certificate b 1846 via 1837online.com however the name wasn't McGurn but McGORRIN. I haven't found his sister Wineford yet although there are two on 1837online.com but the surname is spelt McGWIDLE. The  eldest child  - Charles, was born in 1838 in Leitrim.

Can anyone help me punch a hole in the brickwall please?

Hi,

There are 2 McGurn families in Leitrim in the Griffiths Valuation. I think this must have been taken after they left.

In 1901 census

there is one McGurn family in Leitrim in KiltyClogher Cloonclare Rosclogher
A shopkeeper called Thomas aged 70. Children Bessie and Thomas.

It may be worth checking these parish records for Christopher's birth.

Thanks for the info. I had found this site but didn't get any names up, mind you that was quite some time ago.

Thomas may well be a descendant who stayed on in Ireland. Family folklore was that the family left Ireland as 'black sheep' because they wouldn't go into the family business but I believe it was due to mixed religion on marriage which would seem more of a good reason to emigrate.

In the 3 years since my original post I have discovered that Christopher had a brother DANIEL McGURN b 1809 who may have emigrated to the US after 1851 census was taken.

There was also a sister in 1851 census BRIDGET McBRIDE who married the lodger WILLIAM LLOYD in July 1851. From the marriage certificate it shows her fathers name PHILIP McGURN.

Interestingly she has put her status at marriage as 'spinster'

So now I have the name of g.g.g.grandfather - PHILIP McGURN. Established children are Christopher, Daniel, Bridget and Charles. With my line descending from Christopher.

I also sent off for the McGwidle certificate and it indeed Christophers daughter Wineford (or Winifred as she developed into)

Not sure if this is any help but have you considered alternative spellings?

One which occured to me as soon as I came across your post was McGirl. This sounds quite like McGurn to me and there were several in Kiltoghert parish Leitrim. I have a greatgrandmother Mary with that surname, born 1841. Her father was a Niall but I have no other information on him.

Yes I had thought of alternative spellings especially after I obtained g.g.grandfathers birth certificate. It was spelt McGorrin. Parents names match correctly even though spelt McGorrin and Gormand (should be Gorml(e)y) 

I see you mentioned McGIRL. I sent of for the Naval Card for Thomas McGURN who died in Aug 1914 and discovered his real name was McGirl. Yet he enlisted as McGurn and is celebrated on the Plymouth War Memorial as McGurn.

As it had his place of birth I was able to pass the info onto one of Thomas's ancestors.

Other variants I have found have been McGwin, McGunn, McGurr and even on one census McGarvey.

Oh for a crystal ball to see into the past  Grin
