1851 census - brighton
« on: Saturday 26 November 05 17:31 GMT (UK) »

was wondering if someone could look up Elizabeth Armstrong (born between 1825-1831) and her son Henry Edward Armstrong (born about 1848). I don't know if elizabeth was married in 1851 but if anyone could find her in Brighton I would be grateful.

Hi
They do not appear on my fiche index of the 1851 for Brighton.   Might they be in the surrounding area?  Where were they born?   Do you have them on another census?

we do have them on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census returns and on these it says they were born in Brighton. the reason we are looking for the 1851 census is because there is a family rumour that Henry Edward Armstrong was not born with this name. We are trying to find out if this is true. I was wondering if you could do a search for Elizabeth and Henry Edward but leaving the surname blank to see if they come up with a different name? Don't worry if you can't, we will have to think of a way round this.

Thanks for looking,

In 1861 Elizabeth is age 34 and born London, Middlesex not Brighton.  I did do a search for her on 1851 and did not find one who had a Henry with her.   Have you searched all the Henry Armstrong births to make sure he was not registered as Armstrong?   Do you have any idea of his birthday?   You could always write direct to Brighton register office and see if they would check to see if a Henry Edward was born to an Elizabeth at that time.    They may well look for you as they are usually very helpful.
I see he married Rose Skinner in Sep 1874 ref Brighton 2b 318.   Have you got his marriage certificate?   Does it give a father?   What age is he on that?

Thanks Andrea,

We do have a name for his father now, he was also Henry Armstrong so it seems unlikely that Henry Edward Armstrong did change his name.  I may well do what you said though and contact the brighton Register office for birth details.

Thanks for your advise,

Hi Ian
Danielle has not been on rootschat since January so you might be better sending her a personal message so that she gets an email.   Click on the grey square under her name.
